— Angela's last words
|
Angela Waters is a major supporting character in Season 1 of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin television series on Max. She is portrayed by Gabriella Pizzolo.
A lonely teen girl who was desperate to belong, Angela was bolstered by a group of alluring, promising young girls. But that new friendship came at a cost, the creation of the original sin.
Biography
Born on March 12, 1983[1], Angela is the illegitimate daughter of Rose Waters and Marshall Clanton, whose clandestine high school affair resulted in Rose's pregnancy with Angela and her twin brother, Archie. Rose's parents moved Angela out of Millwood where she secretly gave birth and raised her children. However, Rose was abusive and an untreated schizophrenic who suffered from religious delusions. She inflicted her pain onto Angela and Archie, the latter of whom she never let out of the house because he "had a face only a mother could love."
The trio moved back to Millwood when Angela was fourteen, and Rose enrolled her in Millwood High School. It was here Angela became an outcast and mocked by the school. She befriended Joseph England who had a crush on her, though they never went past being friends. Angela wanted desperately to fit in.
The popular group of girls - Davie Adams, Corey Bryant, Elodie Honrada, Sidney Haworthe, and Marjorie Olivar, "adopted" Angela and turned her into a popular girl. The group often did their best to embarrass, humiliate, and even degrade Angela through tasks that gave empty promises of acceptance. Angela had a relationship with Elodie that was kept secret from the other girls. Angela was raped by Davie's ex-boyfriend Tom Beasley and called a liar when she told her so-called friends. They decided to punish Angela by erasing her from existence. This horrible torment led Angela to throw herself off a balcony to her death at a Y2K party.
Personality
Angela’s status as Millwood’s ultimate social pariah created a deep sense of insecurity, shyness and vulnerability. Her circumstances, which were beyond her control, led to irreparable damage to her reputation and led to many false assumptions about her as the “crazy” girl. The constant belittlement, mocking and disregard she received created a low self-confidence and self-esteem within. This created an extreme susceptibility to which she accepted further humiliation, degradation and gaslighting at the hands of her new ‘friends’ if it meant eventual acceptance and true friendship.
Physical Appearance
Angela was a young girl with long, straight black hair, dark eyes, pale skin with a short height of five foot three and a half. Angela, to those who glanced her way, can be described as no beauty with average looks pasted on a round face with a frame that borders in favor of the thinner side than the curvier side, just barely.
Series
Season 1
1999
Marjorie Olivar smokes a cigarette that she hands to Angela Waters. The girl is reluctant as her mom will kill her if she finds out. Marjorie tells her to have gum later, so Angela takes a draw, coughing wildly. Marjorie assures her that she'll get used to it. A janitor finds them smoking and confronts the girls, so Marjorie shoves the box into Angela's hands, pinning the blame on her. He dismisses Marjorie but takes Angela by the hand, leading her inside. Later Marjorie asking Angela to forgive her for the cigarette ordeal. She even gives Angela a gift to thank her for taking the blame. Inside the bag, is the same teddy bear but with a “Best Friend 4 Ever” t-shirt.
In October 31, 1999, The group of girls run amok and destroy pumpkins for Halloween. In front of a house, Angela is handeid a bag of dog feces and instructed to throw it at the front door, part of so-called “initiation”. She’s concerned about being seen, but Davie Adams assures her they got her back as she is handed a pumpkin to put over her head as a disguise. The girls laugh at her weak refusal. Nonetheless, Angela forces herself to do as she’s told, but the girls drive off and mockingly wave goodbye. Angela is left at the curbside breathing hard as the owner of the vandalized house yells out to the assailant.
Corey Bryant and Angela sit inside The Wicked Pen Tattoo shop. Corey asks for Angela's opinion on fonts for a tattoo. All of the girls will get their first initials on their shoulders. The tattoo artist asks who is going first, with Corey volunteering Angela, assuring the girl that she'll be right behind her. After a while, Angela's first initial is tattooed on her left shoulder. The artist reminds her to take care of it with Vaseline. She looks up to see an empty couch where Corey should be. She nervously stands, calling out for her friend.
Elodie Honrada and Angela enter the Hall of Mirrors, hand in hand. The pair stops, with Elodie telling Angela they're alone. They start kissing until Davie then walks in and, as a way to divert from Elodie's feelings for Angela, Elodie lies and says that Angela started attacking her. Davie snaps that Angela shouldn't think about coming onto her. She proceeds to call Angela, Xena. Elodie and Davie then leave, with Angela staring at one of the mirrors.
Sidney Haworthe opens a bathroom stall at Millwood High to find Angela sitting next to the toilet, sobbing. Something happened to her. Sidney goes to the other girls where they sit at a classroom table. They have a problem about Angela, which makes Davie scoff, asking what the dead pudding did now. It's not what she did, but what was done to her.
After, Davie talks to Angela at the lockers, as Sidney told them about what happened to her. She wants to make sure she's okay, asking if she knows who did it. Angela nervously admits that it was Tom "Tommy" Beasley, Davie's boyfriend. It wasn't her fault as he did it to her. Davie reels from the revelation and hisses out that Angela's a liar. Tom was her boyfriend, so Davie had to pick a side - Angela or Tommy. She picked Tommy. Instead of helping Angela, she lamed her. In the bathroom, Davie tells the girls that Angela is lying about what happened. The girls wonder if she isn't lying, with Davie calling them dense as it's clear Angela's just trying to get attention, like always. Corey and Sidney thinks it's different this time, angering Davie who doubles-down that Angela's out of control. They need to teach her a lesson. They have to ignore her, pretend that she doesn't exist. They're going to erase Angela Waters. But not just them, everyone else too. They'll turn Angela into a ghost, making her invisible as if she were nothing. The student body slams into Angela and knocks her to the ground, making her drop her papers. The students step on them and ignore her as Davie and her friends laugh from the lockers. Things just kept getting worse, and there was one last final humiliation.
One last nail that Davie wanted to put in Angela's coffin - an even more public shaming. Davie approaches Angela at the swings to apologize for everything that happened. Especially for not believing her. She's been a real "biatch". She wants to make it up to her, they all do. She hands her the Y2K rave flier. They're all going and Angela has to come, as it'll be fun. After that, they'll have a fresh start.
December 31, 1999, Angela calls out in despair for Sidney Haworthe or Davie Adams outside a warehouse currently blasting with music. Tear-stricken, Angela Waters stumbles inside, begging for help to no one’s bother. She finds Sidney and drops to her knees in the middle of the crowd. Through her sobs, she begs Sidney to look at her. Davie, however, angrily mutters to Sidney that they’ve talked about this already, forcing a conflicted Sidney to join her other friends. Devastated, Angela looks around in pain and notices a ladder nearby. She decided to climb. The rave continues in full swing, and as the countdown begins partygoers suddenly take notice of a silhouette up above. The DJ cuts the music, allowing Angela to scream out to the girls below if they finally see her. Davie yells at her to stop, but Angela raised her arms and steps forward.
The crowds disperse with screams of terror, though only five girls stay still. They force themselves to look upon the bloody, gruesome scene before them; Angela’s broken, dead body.
2022
Davie Adams takes her own life after receiving a reminder of the Y2K party in the mail. She is found by her daughter Imogen, who refuses to believe her mom chose to leave her. She becomes obsessed with learning her mother's past, slowly unraveling the mystery of Davie's high school years, including her connection to Angela Waters. She visits a shrine made to Angela in the warehouse where she died, finding it littered with objects both new and old. Imogen is nearly discovered by Millwood's new masked creeper, but hides in time. Imogen and her friend Tabby find the latter's mother, Sidney, at the memorial and confront her, which gets them the first piece of the puzzle. Angela killed herself at midnight and, because no one spoke about the rave or the incident again, her body was found two days later. Her death wasn't investigated because Angela was the "crazy girl with the crazy mother." Sidney insists it was all good between the girls.
Imogen doesn't believe this as it doesn't make sense why Davie and Sidney both committed acts of guilt - suicide and visiting the memorial - if things were fine between them. Imogen begins contacting Angela's other classmates, but no one from her class wants to talk about her, and it's like she's a ghost or urban legend. She still thinks Angela is attached to A, since Angela was connected to their moms, and there has to be a reason A is targeting them.
A sends a text to Noa claiming the reason he's targeting her is because of something her mother, Marjorie, did to Angela Waters. Imogen is elated that her suspicions about the connection between their mothers and Angela were true. Imogen gets a break in her case when Joseph England, a former classmate of Angela's, is willing to talk with her. She goes to the trainyard where he leaves with Tabby. Joseph admits he was in love with her. They didn't date but they were fellow misfits and friends. They sat at lunch together and laughed together. At least, until the she-bitches took her away from him. They adopted her and turned her into a high town bitch. Jo tried to warn her about the girls but she didn't listen. Tabby asks if he knows why Angela killed herself. He thinks it's because she couldn't keep up with the girls and came crashing down on Y2K night. Imogen asks about Angela's family. Her mother Rose was Angela's only family. After she died, Rose snapped and showed up to Millwood High distraught with an old kitchen butcher knife. She attacked the students, as she was was there for revenge and tried to stab multiple students, but not the girls who adopted Angela - a group of boys. One of the teachers stopped her before anyone was hurt. They took her away to an asylum called The Radley Sanitarium in Rosewood. She could still be there. He asks for his money and Imogen hands him a wad of cash. Imogen and Tabby leave and discuss what they just learned. Imogen asks if Sidney is still going to the real estate conference and she is. Imogen excitedly says they're going to the Radley Sanitarium to hopefully find Rose Waters.
Imogen looked up The Radley Sanitarium and a few years ago, it was shut down and turned into a hotel. Mr. England - aka Crazy Jo - confirmed what they suspected about their moms being connected to Angela Waters, which might be why A is targeting them. Therefore, if they can find out what happened between Angela and their moms they might figure out who A is.
They meet with an orderly named Eddie Lamb who shows them a guest book from back then. Five people visited Rose after Angela's death using the name "A. Waters", the A presumably standing for Angela. The four girls were Angela's former friends. Rose had a psychotic break after her daughter was raped and then killed herself. Imogen and Tabby are taken aback by the revelation of Angela's rape. According to Rose, it was right before she jumped to her death.
Imogen thinks that if they can figure out what happened to Angela they can figure out who A is and stop him. She wants to solve the sixth signature and find Angela's mother, Rose, who has to be out there somewhere. There's also the assault that happened to Angela. She and Tabby visit Joseph England again to talk about the sign-in book, Rose's psychotic break, and the six signature they can't match. She asks if it's him but he thinks they should leave now. Tabby starts to go but Imogen asks if he knows Angela was raped. He questions if someone told her that. She realizes that he didn't think they would find out, and only sent them to Rosewood thinking it would be a dead-end.
Imogen gets Angela's address from the Millwood High student database and breaks-in on Thanksgiving day. She calls out but no one answers. She walks through the house, finding newspapers scattered across the floor and the house in disarray. She sees a young girl's bed with ropes tied to the posts. In another room is a metal cage full of straw, a giant metal lock hanging from it. She goes upstairs and becomes scared by A's mask hanging on the wall. She examines it before running down the steps. She runs down to see Joseph England entering. She quickly apologizes, but he warns that he told her to let it go. He questions why she couldn't. He pulls out a knife and she runs upstairs, hiding in a room. He bursts through so she knocks a bookcase over, using the distraction to flee to another room. She hides behind the door, struggling to catch her breath. As he peaks around the corner, she slides down the wall and gasps in horror at a dead corpse on a mattress. A large porcelain doll is next to the corpse, which wears a dress. Joseph sees her and she slams a vase into his skull, cursing as she does. She looks back at the corpse then runs out of the home and down the street, struggling to catch her quickened breath.
Imogen tells the girls about her discoveries. She thinks the corpse is Angela's. They decide to confront Joseph but can't find him at the house - or the dead body. . They go to the train car to find Joseph hanging from the ceiling. Mouse remarks that he left a note and reluctantly picks it up. It reads, “Angela Waters did not die in vain.” Tabby points out a yearbook on the table and it's Davie's senior yearbook. His signature matches the sixth one in the book. Joe, who was in love with Angela, visited Rose Waters and didn't want them to know. Imogen shows her the yearbook where all the mom's faces have been scratched out. He hated them for what they did to Angela and wanted to punish them. They believe Crazy Jo was A.
The girls take the truth to their moms and demand to know the rest of the story. Sidney starts by admitting they were bullies in high school, horrible, mean girl bullies. Elodie reveals that she and Angela were in a secret relationship, but she denied it and said Angela was obsessed with her. Corey talked Angela into getting a tattoo, even though she knew Angela would get in trouble with her holy roller mother. Marjorie was smoking outside of school and when the janitor caught them, she made Angela say it was just her. Sidney wasn't a good friend to Angela. She confided in her about the assault and she didn't help her. Imogen asks why they were all so cruel to Angela. Elodie tries to justify it as it being a different time, with girls being meaner in the '90s. Corey admits Angela was an easy target. Marjorie adds that it was a game - a terrible game. Imogen asks about her mom and what she did to Angela. One Halloween, Davie thought it would be funny to make Angela throw filth at someone's door. After she did it, they all drove away and just left her there, alone. Now, they keep talking to one another so nothing like this ever happens again. Nothing leaves this room and after tonight, they move on.
Faran learns that Tom Beasley, the current sheriff, raped Angela in 1999. Imogen also learned something about Beasley - he dated her mom in high school. The girl's moms claimed Beasley raping Angela was just a rumor that was never confirmed, though Angela did tell them it was him. Davie and Tom broke up right after Davie heard the rumors. "A" returns as not being Crazy Jo. The girls realize it's someone else entirely, who is hellbent on punishing those guilty for Angela's death. If A is punishing the guilty for what they did to Angela Waters, Noa thinks Sheriff Beasley would be the guiltiest of them all. Imogen thinks someone must be guiltier.
They assemble in front of the Waters house to look for clues to A's identity and his connection to Angela Waters. There's also only one way to find out if A's inside. They gather in the living room as Mouse remarks that the place is even creepier in the daytime. They can't leave any stones unturned. Faran looks around the house and asks if someone else could have lived here, someone other than Angela and Rose. Tabby gets excited as she references a secret formed brother no one talks about, like in People Under the Stairs. Noa looks at her disbelief, asking if she could not with the horror movie references right now. Imogen moves an old wooden plank to find height markings etched onto a door frame. There are two sets of them - both initials are AW. Faran asks if there's more than one Angela Waters.
Noa calls for the girls to quickly come into a room where she and Tabby are standing. A metal crate is in front of them. In the back of the cage were crayons. Noa wonders why crayons are in the back of an animal cage. Faran incredulously asks if someone was kept in it. Imogen tells them to keep looking as they are so close. She finds a polaroid under the fridge that she shows the girls. In the photo are two kids in Halloween costumes. Tabby is right, Angela wasn't an only child.
The Liars are lured to Millwood High by A, who kidnaps their mothers and holds them hostage. They are subjected to a trial for their sins, with the mom's being forced to finally tell the full truth about what they did to Angela Waters. "A" and is unmasked as being Angela's twin brother Archie Waters with the help of their father, Marshall Clanton.
Clanton repeats that Angela took her life not because of what Tom did to her, but because of something else. Something insidious that happened right under their noses. Imogen thinks she knows what Principal Clanton is talking about. She takes out Davie's diary pages that were with her mother. They say “erase her” on almost every page. She asks what it means. The moms exchange a look.
Back in 1999, Davie talks to Angela at the lockers, as Sidney told them about what happened to her. She wants to make sure she's okay, asking if she knows who did it. Angela nervously admits that it was Tommy. It wasn't her fault as he did it to her. Davie reels from the revelation and hisses out that Angela's a liar. Tom was her boyfriend, so Davie had to pick a side - Angela or Tommy. She picked Tommy. Instead of helping Angela, she blamed her.
After that, they'll have a fresh start. When Angela arrived at the party she was a mess, like she had crawled through the woods. But Davie still made them ignore her, shun her, even though Angela was clearly in distress. They didn't know it would lead to her death. She concludes that is what "erase her" means.
With the truth of Angela Waters finally revealed, "A" and Clanton look to kill her former friends, their daughters, and blame it on Tom Beasley. Their efforts are thwarted when the Liars survive the attack and both of them are arrested. Archie, however, escapes police custody to continue his reign of terror.
Season 2
On January 1, 2023, Archie returns to Angela's gravesite to pay his respects to her with flowers and a teddy bear. Imogen and Tabby knew he would be there and tipped off the police, which leads to Archie's ultimate capture.
Six months later, the tale of Archie Waters and his crazy family have become infamous within the online community of SpookySpaghetti.com. Angela is forever remembered as the sister of a serial killer. Her life becomes one of inspiration for hundreds of fanfictions, each depicting different variations of abuse that she endured at the hands of mother. Rose also becomes infamous, with tales of Archie using flesh to create his mask growing into the legend of Bloody Rose. There are postings about sightings of Bloody Rose and how to summon her. If you look into a mirror, one that Angela also looked into and chant "Bloody Rose Waters" five times, she will appear. Imogen, Faran, Tabby, Mouse, and Noa decide to test the tale by breaking into Millwood High after hours. They stare into the mirrors in the girls bathroom and perform the chant, though nothing happens.[2]
The Little Liars become targets of Bloody Rose, forced to endure painful "tests". They decide to track down the real Rose Waters to determine if she's Bloody Rose or not. Mouse and Ash lead the charge, with Mouse ultimately finding an unhoused encampment called "tenet city". She alerts her friends and, after passing out fliers, they find Rose. She throws herself off a bridge after learning Archie is alive. The girls go through Rose's belongings and find a photograph of Angela.[3]

Trivia
- Angela's character seems to be based on popular horror icon Carrie White from 1976 movie Carrie. Both are unpopular girls who were harassed, insulted, humiliated and bullied by a group of popular girls led by a cruel and ruthless teenager. Angela, like Carrie, was raised by an extremely religious, mentally unstable and abusive mother.
- Angela's suicide at the Y2K party can be considered a parallel to the Black Prom in the movie Carrie. Because Angela, like Carrie, went to the party after fighting with her mother. At the party, thinking that she was finally accepted, it turned out to be one last humiliation before the end of the year, pushing her to the limit, just like Carrie.
- Angela wanting to belong in the popular girls clique, fit in with her "friends", and remove her title of "loser" is similar Mona Vanderwaal from Pretty Little Liars. Both characters were also bullied by the popular girls.
- Angela had a big "A" tattoo on her left shoulder.
Quotes
Rose: Look at yourself. Your face, showing off your body. Angela: Please, Mom. All the girls wear makeup and dresses. Rose: Don't you see? This is why you were hurt. You invited it! Angela: No, I didn't. Don't blame me. What's bad about wanting to go to a party with my friends? Rose: Your friends? Angela: I was invited. They want me... and I'm going. |
