Bethany's Attempted Killer was a previously anonymous character who struck Bethany Young in the back of the head with a shovel while believing her to be Alison DiLaurentis. The body, which was dressed identical to Alison, was discovered by Melissa Hastings, who mistakenly believed Spencer was the killer. She buried Bethany, unaware that she was alive at the time.

Mona Vanderwaal had been ruthlessly bullied by her high school peer Alison DiLaurentis for many years, and had begun enacting her revenge by sending her anonymous threats. Alison was fed up with the threats and decided to confront everyone on her list of suspects the night of On the night of September 1st, 2009 wearing a yellow top and black leggings.
Meanwhile, a 15 year old Bethany Young was a patient at Radley Sanitarium who harbored deep rage for Jessica DiLaurentis because of an affair Jessica had with Mr. Young, Bethany's father. Bethany was friends with Jessica's institutionalized daughter Charlotte DiLaurentis, who had been given clothing identical to her sister Alison DiLaurentis. Charlotte had "out" privileges at Radley, so on the night of September 1st, 2009, Bethany stole Charlotte's clothing and posed as her to escape the institution and enact her revenge against Jessica.
On the night of September 1st, 2009, Mona was out for a walk and came across Bethany wearing a yellow top and black leggings. She saw Bethany from behind and mistook her for Alison. Overcome with emotion, Mona picked up a shovel and struck her over the back of the head. She was so upset after seeing the bleeding girl that she fled without any further investigation. Bethany's body was found by Melissa Hastings who had been searching for her sister Spencer. She saw Bethany's injured head and clothing, recognizing the clothing from an encounter with Alison earlier that evening. She believed Spencer had killed Alison and pushed her into an empty grave, unknowingly burying her alive.
It was believed for many months that the person who struck Bethany was the same person who killed her, though this was later proven false.

The night Bethany escaped Radley and wandered into the DiLaurentis' backyard, Mona had followed her thinking she was Alison. Mona was very angry and finally, thinking about everything Alison did to her, she picked up the shovel and hit Bethany from behind. Mona left the scene and was surprised later to find Alison ragged and scared but alive.
