"Chapter Fourteen: When A Stranger Calls Back" is the fourth episode of the second season of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. It is the fourteenth episode overall.
Synopsis[]
Faran's strength is put to the test as Mouse leads her friends on a dangerous search for Rose Waters.
Summary[]
In a video on SpookySpaghetti.com, Rose Waters is restrained on a bed as Archie stands over her with a knife. She apologizes as he didn't deserve the cage. He makes a slice on her face.
Mouse tells The Little Liars that Bloody Rose is real and was at Rose E. Ricotta for a fucked up game of hide and seek. Noa realizes this is either the real Rose Waters who is alive and fucking with them or as Tabby puts it, someone pretending to be her and fucking with them. Faran is ready to kick the skinny old bitch's ass. Mouse tells them about the messed up note that Bloody Rose left her. They're all final girls which means one of them could be next. Imogen suggests a pact to not answer the phone alone. Faran is in the best shape of her life and will take the bitch down herself. Imogen suggests asking Dr. Sullivan for help even though it's late. They agree so Imogen leaves a voicemail for her to ask about scheduling an emergency session.
Mouse asks Lola about the phone call she got asking her to take Mouse to the party. It's very important that she remembers what happened. Lola explains the woman's name was Rose and she was calling from the other side.
JUNE 8th
The girls gather at the Haworthe house where they unpack groceries. Mouse worries their summoning for Rose Waters worked. Her grandmother talked to Rose on the phone who said she was calling from the other side. Faran can't deal with any ghost shit. Imogen's phone rings with a call from Dr. Sullivan's office. She answers on speaker and the receptionist tells Imogen that Dr. Sullivan had an accident and is recovering in the hospital. The girls don't think this is a coincidence. Noa recalls how last year A threatened to kill them if they said anything. This person isn't messing around either. They need to keep their heads down and their mouths shut. Imogen will track down Dr. Sullivan, find out the tea, and report it back.
Kelly and Greg look at a positive pregnancy test as they rehearse for Redemption House. “Lance” is supportive of “Judy” having a choice and whatever she wants to do. Pastor Malachi objects as that's not the script. Kelly did some rewrites because she had doubts about Redemption House. Some of the things could be hurtful to people she cares about. Pastor Malachi is troubled by these doubts, as they are the devil's. Martha insists this is why Kelly needs to be in the church working on Redemption House and not out roller skating. Pastor Malachi tells Kelly to come to confession and accept her penance.
Imogen visits Dr. Sullivan by lying that she's Sullivan's daughter. They all worry about her and want to know what happened. Sullivan was leaving her office, taking the stairs at a late hour, when someone pushed her. She didn't see who it was as they were behind her. She suspects it's a former patient as that's been known to happen. She's fine though, but asks about the urgent-sounding message Imogen left for her the night before. Imogen lies that it was a false alarm. She offers to get Sullivan a pudding cup from the cafeteria and leaves before she can answer.
Tabby is working at The Orpheum when she gets a call from an unknown number. She answers rudely and the woman is the Chairwoman from PIFT. One of their filmmakers withdrew and, while Tabby's film wasn't selected, it did make an impression. They want something more recent from Tabby to consider. She tells Christian who is excited for her. Her new short doesn't exist yet, but she has two days to send something in. Christian is excited about the challenge and offers to help. He asks if she has any ideas for a new short.
That night, the girls have ice cream at the Millwood Creamery where Imogen relays what she learned from Sullivan. Tabby wonders why Bloody Rose is keeping tabs on Dr. Sullivan. Regardless, this means they can't warn her about it. Imogen is going to low-key keep tabs on her. Mouse is quiet and painfully admits she might be responsible for creating Bloody Rose. In the early days of Spookyspaghetti, during the trial, she went online and posted details of A's mask online about it being stitched together. People took that detail and built on that legend until it became that Archie skinned his mother to make his mask. Now there's someone out there with a bloody face coming for them. Faran apologizes but she's not responsible for this craziness. Tabby agrees as someone is appropriating Bloody Rose's iconography, but that's not on her. Imogen doesn't think it is Rose Waters under the bandages. They want to find the real Rose Waters, with Mouse suggesting they use SpookySpaghetti to their advantage for once to track her down. If Rose is alive, they'll know she's not a ghost. Tabby changes the topic to her short film that she needs help with.
Tabby stares at her blank computer screen. She opens her closet and takes out a shoe box. She flashes back to hanging out with Chip in her room. He asks what their next cinematic undertaking should be, and she opens the shoe box.
Christian and Tabby walk through the Orpheum as Tabby pitches her new short idea to him. He calls her idea a genius and asks when she came up with the idea. She claims she came up with it last night in a total “light bulb moment”. He assumes she's playing the lead of the manager, but she's not sure as she's more of a behind-the-camera person. Christian thinks she could be in front of the camera too. She's movie star beautiful and he thinks it's cool when the final girl is black, which she agrees with.
Sullivan asks if Imogen has anything else to do on a beautiful day other than spend time with her. They're doing crossword puzzles and this triggers a flashback to Imogen and Davie doing crosswords together when Imogen is in the hospital after a cheerleading accident. She did her first pyramid and is now in a sling. Davie thinks it's time to hang up the cheerleading outfit as it's her job to keep her safe. Sullivan asks where Imogen went just now. She explains she and Davie used to do crossword puzzles together when she was sick or got hurt. Sullivan wishes grief got easier with time, but it's non-linear. She's had her share of loss too. Imogen asks if she can call anyone for her - family or friends, but Sullivan insists she's fine and asks for the next clue.
Christian and Tabby prepare for filming when the Little Liars and Ash get there to help. They instantly start prepping and getting ready. They begin filming “The Projectionist” with Faran and Noa starring as employee workers, and Tabby as the manager who punches the bad guy, Christian. They shoot the penultimate scene in the red room. Ash plays the greedy manager who gets killed while Imogen and Mouse are fearful patrons. Tabby is happy with the final product.
The phone rings at Pinball Pizza which scares Noa. Benny picks it up but there's no one on the other side. Noa tells him she needs a break and runs out back. Jen follows her and asks if she's okay. Noa can't deal with his bullshit today. Jen asks if she wants to skip the rest of their shift so Noa agrees. Jen offers her dad's place as somewhere to go. He has a pool and is away on business. They can go and no one will know they went.
Mouse sleuths on SpookySpaghetti by posting on the site that she wants to “join our dark mother in her kingdom” like Nick and Sabrina. She wants to find the real Rose Waters, not a ghost or a cosplayer. He wonders what she'll do if she finds Rose. Mouse wants to know if her attacker is Rose or someone else.
Faran is working at the pool when Henry visits with flowers. He's been feeling horrible about how they left things. He understands if she doesn't want to dance anymore - she doesn't owe him an explanation. He's sorry and gives her the flowers. He signed up for swimming lessons at the YMCA so he could be closer to her. She appreciates him making the effort, but if he wants to learn how to swim, she can teach him private lessons after hours. He smiles as that sounds better than the YMCA.
Noa and Jen arrive at the mansion. Her dad is an asshole who left her and her mom when they needed her most. But he has a sweet pad now and she has the alarm code. They enter with Jen pulling Noa to the bar where they take shots and drink wine. They play pool, drink, laugh, have pillow fights, raid the closet, and play with the clothes. Noa eyes the watch collection and closes the case again. They sit in the hot tub while drinking liquor. Jen's father is loaded because he's in pharmaceuticals and sells the drugs people like their moms get addicted to. When they needed him the most he ditched. Noa is mad as he has a huge mansion but won't give her money for her mom's rehab. If he won't give her mom money they should take it. They decide to steal one of his Rolexes, clinking their glasses together.
Imogen is eating pizza with Dr. Sullivan when Rob Winters calls. She decides to take it outside
Imogen goes to the Winters House where Rob is packing a bag. Blake's mother passed away suddenly and with Estelle's ear infection, she can't be on the plane. Imogen understands and Rob explains how Imogen must give the baby ear drops. Imogen asks if she is really their only option. Rob needed someone he could trust, someone who wouldn't let anything happen to their baby. She insists he can trust her and he kisses Estelle goodbye before running out.
Kelly enters the church to see Malachi and Kelly touching before going into confession. Kelly angrily calls them hypocrites and invites Greg to go skinny dipping tonight.
Tabby edits her film when she watches footage of her and Christian laughing together. She flashes back to her and Chip spitballing ideas for short films. She proposes Jaws in a movie theater, specifically the Orpheum. He calls it genius and writes it down. In the present, Tabby is in tears as she looks at the footage.
Imogen answers a call from Rob who tells her that he got an alert saying one of their windows is open. She stands up scared and goes to check the windows. She calls Johnny on her way to the kitchen. He's not busy right now since she told half the town he's a player. She rolled her eyes as it was one girl. She invites him to hang out as she's babysitting her daughter and could use the company. He agrees and she texts him the address. She takes a butcher knife out of a block.
Henry and Faran get into the pool for his first swimming lesson. She wraps her arms around his neck, as their first lesson will be holding his breath. She kisses him and wraps her legs around him. He helps her to the side until they're interrupted by Greg and Kelly, who have the same thoughts. She apologizes for interrupting. She wants to do something fun away from her mother but steers Greg away as they'll leave. Faran reluctantly says it's okay and that she doesn't need to leave. She invites them to jump in since the water is perfect. Grey and Kelly talk as Henry murmurs to Faran that now is a good time to let him drown.
Imogen surveys the house with her knife and gets to Estelle's room. The baby is sleeping peacefully. The open window is in the baby's room. Imogen, serious, closes the window and picks up the baby. She walks down the steps with the baby in one arm and the knife in the other. She hears an ominous knocking from the front door. It opens and Johnny sees her holding a baby, a knife, and crying. He pauses, hoping she doesn't take this the wrong way, but asks if she's in the middle of a full-on spiral. She's shaking a little as she nods yes. He asks if she wants to hand the knife and the baby to him so she can have a moment to herself. She agrees and he takes the knife, setting it aside, before taking Estelle into the other room. She wipes her tears and takes a moment to relax.
Greg and Henry splash each other in the pool while Kelly and Faran talk off to the side. Kelly is glad Faran and Henry are doing better as they were going through some stuff. This surprises Faran, as Henry is talking to her about them. Kelly assures her that it's not just her. Pastor Malachi has been holding group sessions in which everyone has to participate. They get super vulnerable and truthful, and the group trauma bonds. Faran laughs nervously as it's nice to know their relationship is so traumatizing. Kelly laughs it off as it's not that. Henry's been struggling with the fact Faran's been lying to him for so long. Faran is upset about this and looks at Henry angrily.
Imogen finds Johnny without Estelle, who is asleep in her room. He hands Imogen a glass of water and asks if she's okay. She admits it's been a crazy couple of days with a lot of weird shit happening. It started the night of Mouse's birthday when someone went after her and then someone went after their therapist. She decides not to tell him anymore as it could put him in danger or worse, he'll go running for the hills. He's not running for the hills and doesn't see her as unhinged. Most girls he dates pretend to be perfect for the first couple of months then break out their freak flag. He respects her putting it all out there right out of the gate. She sits up questioning his statement. He's here if she needs him, whatever she needs, and holds her hand. They're very close when Mr. Winters calls as he sees a young man enter earlier on his ring camera. She brushes it off as her friend Johnny who is just leaving. Johnny laughs and offers to sit in his car to wait for her. She's going to be there all night as she doesn't have anything better to do since she trashed his reputation. They laugh and share a smile.
Mouse is on the floor while Ash leans against her on the bed. She's getting tons of tips about Rose Waters from Spookyspaghetti. She's making a list so they can check out these places together. He comments on it being a lot of places, and she smiles up at him that he's the bestest boyfriend ever. He agrees and they can take his bike.
Kelly comes home to an angry Martha. She went swimming, but not by herself, which upsets Martha. She calls her impure and a sinner, standing up. From outside the house, Kelly's pleas of “no mama” echo.
Kelly wakes up on the floor of their prayer room at the foot of the altar. Photos of Kelly are on the altar along with a family portrait, though Tom's face is scratched out. She opens the door and Martha greets her with breakfast. She reminds her daughter to be strong toward each other and for the souls of the town. Kelly, almost robotic, promises that she will be.
Imogen leaves the Winters house and sees Johnny parked out front. He opens the door for her and puts her bag in the back seat. She's pleasantly surprised that he stayed. He promised that he would and she pauses before kissing him. They part for a moment before kissing again.
Christian loves Tabby's film so far and has some ideas for POV shots. He worries he oversteps because of her reaction. She admits this idea was something she spitballed with Chip. It was her idea, completely, but she and Chip used to spend hours dreaming crazy loglines of horror movies they would make together. As fun as the short was to shoot it was also triggering as a reminder of something that's still part of her life. He tells her that she doesn't owe that guy anything and not to let him take this away from her. No matter what happens with PIFT, she made a new movie that kicks serious ass. She suddenly kisses him and then asks if that's okay. He smiles that it was for him, asking if it was okay for him. She nods and they kiss again.
Noa is working at Pinball Pizza when she gets an anonymous call. She answers and it's the police asking if she will accept the charges. She visits the pool to ask Shawn for help. Jen's rich father got her arrested and she just called Noa from jail. She snuck in to grab some clothes and stuff when he called the cops on her. She's in jail until she can post two grand for bail. Shawn is surprised and comments on that being a lot of money. He then smiles, agreeing to help Noa get her out of there. She's elated and jumps to her feet, kissing him multiple times.
Tabby sends an email to the PIFT panels with “The Projectionist” attached as a file.
At the Millwood Pool, Faran gets a visitor from the mom whose daughter almost drowned. She thanks Faran for saving her child. She's glad there are people like Faran in the world. People who don't sit on the sidelines. They run toward the danger, not away from it. She squeezes Faran's hand before leaving.
Noa and Jen sit together on the floor of Noa's apartment. Jen apologizes for dragging her into her nightmare family drama. Noa tells her not to apologize. She feels terrible as it was her idea to take the watch. Jen feels all alone, but Noa assures her that she's not. They share a long look before Noa leans over and kisses Jen. The kiss turns into a make out.
Mouse gets on the back of Ash's bike, lowering the visor on her helmet. They drive through Millwood to check out different locations including the Y2K warehouse, the Millwood Quarry, and the train yard, where Mouse decides to split the list with Ash.
Faran ignores a call from Henry to make her smoothie. The phone rings again and she answers assuming it's Henry. She asks what he wants. Bloody Rose is on the other line, ready to give Faran her final girl test - if she's strong enough. She taunts Faran by asking if she's still the same, weak, little, broken child. Faran flashes back to telling the girls she's in the best shape of her damn life. Now, Faran is ready for her test and asks when and where. Bloody Rose tells her to come to a construction site alone. Faran gets a box cutter and heads to the site. She walks until she sees a swimming dummy wrapped in barbed wire with a letter addressed to her on its chest. She takes the envelope and reads, “A FINAL GIRL CAN NEVER LOSE HER STRENGTH. LIFT THE GARTER. IF IT TOUCHES THE GROUND BEFORE TIME RUNS OUT, SOMEONE YOU LOVE DIES.” The timer starts with two hours. She takes her phone out of her pocket, keeping the blade, and positions herself under the metal garter. She tells herself mind over matter and lifts it off the cement blocks.
Imogen and Tabby are on the couch when Mouse calls to ask Imogen about the last time she saw Rose Waters. She was unhoused and at the Millwood soup kitchen. Mouse has a lead about where Rose might be - in an encampment under the bridge. Imogen warily asks if Mouse is there right now. She confirms and looks over the encampment. She splits up from Ash, so Imogen tells Mouse not to do anything until she and the girls get there. Mouse hangs up and looks at the fliers she made of Rose.
Faran's phone rings but she still has over an hour left on her timer. She grunts in pain.
The rest of the girls meet by the bridge without Faran. Mouse has an image of what Rose Waters supposedly looks like and passes it out to the girls. She's hoping they can get lucky with showing them to residents of the encampment. The girls start their trek. Meanwhile, Faran continues to balance the heavy beam on her shoulders. She's beginning to sweat, tremble, and struggle to keep her legs upright.
One of the unhoused men points out Rose's tent. They cautiously walk over and find Rose Waters, with Imogen confirming her identity. They want to talk to Rose about her son, Archie, which scares Rose as she didn't know he was alive. Mouse tells her not to worry as he's not a threat anymore. Rose charges through the girls as she flees. They chase after her, trying to get her to stop. Rose climbs the side of the bridge and jumps off. The girls watch in horror as her body disappears into the river. As the others stare over the edge in horror, Mouse walks away to find proof that it is Rose Waters. They rummage through her mostly useless belongings. Mouse finds a picture of Angela Waters within her belongings. Imogen finds Rose's psychiatric file from when she was in the Radley Sanitarium. Everything is in there, including the name of her psychiatrist - Dr. Anne Sullivan.
Faran's whole body shakes and trembles, sweat pouring over her body as the timer has a few seconds left. When it ends, she collapses on the ground in a heap. She's overcome with relief that she fucking did it. She struggles to stand and celebrates passing her test. She falls onto the table to get her belongings. As she does, Bloody Rose appears with her knife. Faran gets out the box cutter and squares off with Bloody Rose. They fight with the match being even until Bloody Rose gets the upper hand. They fall to the ground and Faran frees herself. She grabs a stone and smashes it on the killer's shoulder. The woman doesn't react and follows Faran again, this time slicing her arm with the knife. Bloody runs down Faran's arm and she decides to flee. She reaches a chain link fence that is chained shut. With no other way out, she drags herself over the fence and passes the barbed wire on the top. She lands as Bloody Rose stands on the other side, staring at her through a ripped tarp. Faran screams and runs away while Bloody Rose watches.

Trivia[]
- This episode title refers to the 1993 thriller horror film titled, When A Stranger Calls Back. The film is about, "A retired detective and a crisis-center counsellor hunt a killer stalking a co-ed; the killer's next intended victim is a young babysitter alone in the house with two sleeping children" and starred Carol Kane and Charles Dunning. It served as a sequel to the 1979 film, When A Stranger Calls.
- This episode will feature Faran's "final girl test" in which she runs toward the danger instead of away from it.[1]
- The image used in this weeks script page might be from "Red Phone Dispatch", an obscure musical artist whose 2009 CD cover features the same red dial phone with the words "Safety in Numbers" beneath the artist name.
- Faran has her final girl test from Bloody Rose, which entails holding a metal beam on her shoulders for two hours. She then has a physical altercation with the villain, which is a first for the season.
- The timeline of this episode is from June 6th-June 11th, 2023.
- Kelly reveals that she and Henry are part of Kairos sessions. In real life, these sessions "is a nine-session course that covers four major areas: Biblical – We discover that mission lies at the center of God's concern and that an overriding theme throughout the whole Bible is God blessing His people to be a blessing to all people groups."
- In PLL, these sessions are more comparable to group therapy.
- When Mouse calls Imogen to ask about Rose Waters, a flashback occurs to "Chapter Eight: Bad Blood" to the soup kitchen scene.
