JUNE 2nd
FIRST DAY OF SUMMER SCHOOL
The Little Liars stare in disgust at the sight of Millwood High School, still in disbelief over having to attend summer school. Tabby remarks on the Silver Lining Playbook that they're all in this together. They link arms and enter their summer hell together. Inside, Imogen is stunned there are two sections prepping to take the keystone exams. All the girls are in Section A except Imogen. She transfers herself by writing her name on the list.
Imogen's self-transfer doesn't go over well with the teacher, who boots her back to the overflow classroom taught by Mrs. Murray. Imogen enters the other room to find herself surrounded by delinquents. The students recognize her and break into whispered rumors about the Millwood Massacre and her pregnancy. Once seated, Imogen finds a rose inside her desk.
Mrs. Gibbons in Section A calls attendance for Nick Brody and Sabrina Hooper, who are absent on account of being murdered by Bloody Rose the other night; not that anyone knows the truth. Jennifer Fox enters the classroom a bit late. She and Noa exchange glances of recognition.
Jen is in the bathroom washing up when Noa finds her, confirming they know each other. Jen was wondering if Noa was going to say hi or if this would be a "what happens in juvie stays in juvie" situation. She's there because she flunked her keystone exam and Millwood is the only school in a twenty-mile radius that offers a summer course. Noa sarcastically welcomes her to hell. Jen wants to hang out and get coffee so they can catch up. Noa awkwardly agrees. Jen asks for Noa's new number since she changed it. Noa is hesitant at first but gives it away.
The Little Liars head to an afternoon session with Dr. Sullivan, who asks about their first day of summer school. Tabby calls it especially lame while Imogen spirals over not being in Section A with the other girls. This was not the "hot girl summer" that Noa had in mind. Dr. Sullivan notices their frustration, which is warranted. She was a punk in high school and landed herself in summer school more than once. She managed to have a good time despite this. She suggests they reframe their situation. They're only in class for a few hours in the morning which leaves plenty of time to have a "hot girl summer". She tells them to go to the lake, get a part-time job, or have a casual summer fling. Summer school might be epically lame, but it's not life or death, which should be a relief.
Imogen stays behind at Dr. Sullivan's to discuss her meds. She's been having nightmares and maybe hallucinations. One of the hallucinations she had was maybe about her mom. It made Imogen think about her mom's mental health and medication plan, which ultimately wasn't enough. Sullivan suggests finding out the prescriptions she was taking, with Imogen deciding to ask her father. Sullivan assures Imogen that she will be okay.
Tabby asks Wes if he's looking to stock up for the summer rush. He's already hired someone new. Christian emerges from the back in a style that reminds Tabby of Chip. He just moved to Millwood from New York, which Tabby is sorry to hear. He has experience as a projectionist, so Wes asks Tabby to show him the ropes.
Faran boxes with the coach, who wonders if her boxing is as good as her swimming. He needs lifeguards who can keep the other yahoos in line. She's interested so he asks for her number so he can send her the details later. She's hesitant but agrees to it.
Noa and Jen sit at the park as they catch up on their lives, including their shared disdain for community service. They have similar stories, including how both their moms relapsed. Jen is doing better now though it's still a daily struggle. Jen asks if she was part of the Millwood Massacre with the psycho in a mask. Noa tells it was all "crazy kinds of fucked up". Jen also asks if Noa is still seeing Shawn, and Noa confirms that he's around.
Tabby tells Christian about the shared responsibilities and protocols at The Orpheum. He asks for her number in case he needs to switch shifts since she'll be his direct supervisor. Tabby hesitates but agrees to give her number. Christian heard that she made a horror movie and he's into them as well. He likes prosthetics and masks - the bloodier the better. She lies that horror isn't her thing.
Sawyer gives Imogen a list of the medications and doses he can remember Davie taking. He asks what's going on with her. She decides to tell him that she's having anxiety and working with a doctor to figure out what medications to take. All of her friends are trying to figure out how to have a great summer. She feels like she has to reset everything to do that. Sawyer offers his place to her if she needs a few days to reset somewhere private.
The congregation meets at Our Mother of Holy Grace where Pastor Malachi is giving a sermon alongside Martha Beasley. He's excited about everyone's willingness to participate in Redemption House. Greg whispers to Kelly to call the ordeal "batshit crazy". She tells him to be quiet as lots of famous people get their start from performing in church groups. Malachi reminds them of the responsibilities they have to portray the sins and perils of the mortal world. Sandy asks if Kelly is auditioning for the cheerleader who gets into a drunk driving accident and kills the crossing guard. Kelly tells her to shut up or she'll run her over one dark lonely night. Martha asks everyone to spread the word to the men of Millwood that they have powerful and important roles to fill in their play. Including the premarital sex leads, which Kelly whispers to Greg is theirs since it's the romantic leads. Sandy tells them not to be so sure because she's perfect for the role, having been practicing all her life.
Imogen is sitting at the bus station when she finds a help wanted sign for Rocky's Diner. She visits to ask about an application. The woman, Rocky, asks her if she has any experience in the kitchen, so Imogen lies that she and her mom volunteer at a soup kitchen regularly. Rocky needs immediate help, which is perfect as Imogen can start tomorrow. She says her name is Leigh Able.
Noa talks to Shawn on his bed about a confession she needs to make. She admits her mom isn't at work, but in rehab, because she needed more time. Noa had to get out of Shawn's house because of his mom. It wasn't good for her there and, after six months of couch surfing, she needed to be home in her space. He understands but wishes she would have told him. She apologizes for lying. Her mom will be home soon for real. But until then, they have the apartment to themselves this summer without any adult supervision. She kisses Shawn and they roll over on the bed.
Tabby scrolls through Christian's Instagram when Imogen enters with news of seeing her dad. She also got a job waitressing at a diner near her dad's. She doesn't mind the bus ride since it clears her head. Tabby tried to get Imogen a job at The Orpheum, but Wes hired Christian instead. Imogen takes Tabby's phone to check him out. She calls him cute, lying down to scroll through the pictures. Tabby isn't sure she's ready to approach things romantically but admits Christian is crazy talented. Imogen tries to zoom in on a picture and accidentally likes it. They freak out as Tabby wonders what to do as that post is from three months ago. Imogen suggests she follow Christian which will be less weird than just randomly liking a photo. She tells Tabby to like a few others so she can play it out as admiring his work. Imogen teases Tabby that Christian is cute.
Elodie gives Mouse a list of house rules to follow while she and Shirley are away. Lola tells Elodie to calm down as she'll look after Mouse, giving the teen a secret knowing wink. Elodie wants Mouse's secret phone number too. Mouse texts her mom from the number. Elodie asks Mouse to show Lola around the pawn shop after dinner.
Greg and Kelly rehearse for the Redemption House play. They kiss because the script says so, though Greg wants more since the script says they have sex. Kelly laments that it happens off-stage, not doing it in front of everyone. Greg is frustrated over the sudden lack of sex in their relationship. She may have re-virginized but he hasn't. He doesn't understand why she did it anyway, since he's sure Pastor Malachi doesn't care about who is or isn't smashing. This was her decision because Mama wanted her to. Greg gets his jacket to leave so he can take a cold shower.
Mouse dusts the dolls at Honrada Pawn when she finds a rose with the dolls. Lola is on the computer and asks if she can watch her shows on it. She finds the website for SpookySpaghetti, which Mouse lies is just the game she plays. As she logs out, she sees Nick and Sabrina's images and recalls the teacher marking them absent in class.
The Little Liars meet in the courtyard so Mouse can tell them about Nick and Sabrina's absence. Imogen can't believe she's still banished to Section B when they had two no-shows. Mouse explains there's a post about them on SpookySpaghetti, which garners teasing from Noa. There's a post saying they went to Bloody Rose's shack in the woods - the same one the girls went to. She wonders if Bloody Rose is real and not just something made up by the site. Faran rationalizes with Mouse that 99.9% of the stories on the site are fake, and reminds her of the promise Mouse made to Ash to stay off the site. Imogen wonders when they went to a creepy cabin in the woods without her. Tabby wasn't invited either. The bell rings which cuts the conversation short.
Noa opens her locker to find a rose. She smiles at it until Jen walks by. She throws it into the locker instead.
In class, Tabby asks the girls if they want to surprise Imogen at her new job after school. The girls agree though Mouse is distracted as she stares at Nick and Sabrina's empty seats.
Coach Rhodes hosts lifeguard tryouts at the community pool. He will be testing their speed, strength, and CPR skills over the next few days because this is not a game or relaxation time. A few will make it to lifeguard while one will make captain. Greg and Faran are up first, and she beats him in the swimming race, much to Ash's glee.
After tryouts, Greg approaches Faran at the lockers to ask why she's there. He assumes she and Peter Pan are supposed to be dancing somewhere. She's there because Coach Rhodes personally asked her to apply. He assumes Rhodes wanted eye candy. Faran snaps back that Rhodes wants someone to pick up his slack. He asks if this is her way of flirting with him. With every ounce of disgust, she tells him it wouldn't happen in a million years before walking out.
Noa works her shift at Pinball Pizza when Benny asks if he should hire Jennifer Fox for a position. Noa vouches for Jen by calling her cool.
Wes and Christian banter behind the counter over horror movies while Tabby sweeps the floor. She listens to their argument until she can't handle their inaccuracies any longer and has to jump in. Christian teases her about horror not being her thing. Wes blurts out that she is and compares her to a real-life final girl. He's heard her compare herself to that many times. He asks Christian if he's seen her short film yet, and he hasn't but would love to see it. He is all smiles over the idea of watching it. Wes suggests they watch it now, but Tabby interrupts to ask for the rest of her shift off to surprise Imogen.
Imogen is working happily at Rocky's Diner when Tabby, Noa, Mouse, and Faran arrive. Imogen is surprised and sits with them for a while, though her discomfort is obvious. Mouse nervously asks if it's not okay. Noa asks about her name tag, which says Leigh. She lies that it's an old one they had lying around. Faran points out that it looks new. Tabby remembers Leigh as being Davie's middle name. She presses Imogen for the truth. Mouse suggests she apply at the Millwood Creamery in town since she likes ice cream. Imogen likes working at the diner, being there outside of Millwood, where she can turn off her brain and be someone else. Rocky shouts for "Leigh" to get back to work. Imogen thanks the girls for coming by as it does mean a lot. She scampers off to work while the girls watch nervously.
Faran and Henry discuss Imogen's job that night while he rubs her back. His job hunt is going well since every place is staffed up. He expected to be in Pittsburgh by now. He asks about lifeguard tryouts and if her doctor cleared her for it. She assures him that she was cleared and that it went great. Aside from Greg's trash-talking toxic energy. Henry is protective over Greg trash-talking Faran. She tells him she's got this and he reluctantly agrees.
Imogen waits at the bus stop after her shift. She hears a noise in the woods and sees Bloody Rose emerge holding a knife. She closes her eyes believing it to be a hallucination. She wrings her hands as she watches the woman's broken and bloody body limp toward her. Imogen panics and gathers her things. She runs into the street. She waves her hands frantically while screaming for the bus driver to stop. She takes her seat while shaking and looks out the window - Bloody Rose is gone. Imogen quickly takes one of her pills.
Mouse and Ash are asleep in her bed when they wake up to Lola's screams. They run out and Lola questions who Ash is. Mouse asks what happened, and Lola tells her there was a woman outside looking in. Ash runs outside to check. Lola describes the woman's face as being covered by bloody bandages. Mouse shows her a picture of Bloody Rose from SpookySpaghetti, whom Lola identifies. Ash returns to say no one was out there that he could see. Mouse helps her grandmother back to bed.
Lola sets the table for breakfast and asks who Ash is. Mouse chuckles nervously and then reminds her this is Ash, her boyfriend, whom he met last night. Lola doesn't remember and blames it on sleepwalking which she does sometimes. Mouse and Ash exchange a nervous look.
The Liars arrive at school where Imogen is in a seat in Section A. Tabby didn't see her that morning, but Imogen insists everything is fine. She is clutching the desk and is very on edge. Faran describes her as being "turned up". Imogen snaps that she has no reason to be stressed. Mouse asks if she got permission to switch sections, which earns her a glare from Imogen. Mrs. Gibbons comes in and reprimands Imogen for being in the wrong section. Imogen responds flippantly that she was always meant to be in this class with her friends. She knows someone, not saying it's Mrs. Gibbons, but someone must have gotten their wires crossed. It's no harm and no foul, but Imogen is not leaving. Tabby instantly stands up and apologizes to Mrs. Gibbons, saying Imogen had a long night. She pries Imogen from the desk so the five girls can talk in private.
The girls retreat to the bathroom where they confront Imogen about her spiral. Imogen admits that she's flailing. She's having hallucinations about Bloody Rose and her mom. Mouse's Lola saw Bloody Rose too, which Faran remarks isn't helping. Tabby wonders if it was a hallucination or real. Imogen explains what happened to her girls. She worries she's going crazy like her mom. Tabby assures Imogen that she's not crazy, nor is her mom. She doesn't want to trigger Imogen, but they have to unpack what she said about not wanting to be herself anymore. Imogen admits that for a couple of hours every day amidst everything else that was going on, she thought she could be someone else. A girl whose mom didn't kill herself. A girl who wasn't assaulted, a girl who didn't have a baby and then had to give it away. A girl who wasn't attacked and nearly stabbed to death by a masked serial killer. A girl who can't even be with her friends for three miserable hours a day for "shitty fucking summer school". Faran confirms that is all true, but she's more than those things. Tabby likes exactly who Imogen is. They all love who she is. The girls crowd in to give Imogen compliments. Imogen apologizes for having a psychotic break during their hot girl summer. They share a laugh while Imogen apologizes for everything. The girls sit on the bench together for a group hug.
Kelly checks the castings for Redemption House at church. She learns she's playing the Virgin Mary while the premarital sex teens are Sandy and Greg. Sandy rubs it in by telling Kelly that a man has needs and must be released as God intended. But that's where Sandy comes in now. She gives Kelly a smug smile before walking off. Kelly straightens her skirt through tears.
Tabby tells Christian to organize the old film canisters by genre and year per Wes's orders. They geek out over the millimeter of the camera. Tabby offers to show Christian her short film which thrills him. He suggests projecting the film to the screen by hosting a glitzy premiere for her family and friends. She insists they've all seen him, but he insists they should try it on the silver screen. She agrees and decides to invite her friends. He promises to handle everything else.
Faran is sitting for her tryouts when she reaches into her bag, cutting her fingers. She digs inside and pulls out a rose. She observes it for a moment until she hears Greg and Henry arguing outside over Greg's treatment of Faran. She's upset with Henry for doing the opposite of what she told him. Greg calls Henry her "gay little boyfriend" so she decks him, knocking him on his ass. Coach Rhodes calls her into his office. He didn't mean for her to take his "knock some sense into the guys" statement so literally. He's sure Greg deserved it but losing her cool is not a good look for a lifeguard or a captain. Despite her lack of judgment, she swam laps around the other guys and knocked Greg, a guy who outweighs her by 40lbs, down with one punch. She's happy with the promotion.
Imogen talks to Dr. Sullivan about her hard few days. Dr. Sullivan introduces the concept of traumatic grief. She has sustained both trauma and grief in a short time, but that doesn't mean she's a lost cause. It just means they have more work to do, including adjusting her medications. Dr. Sullivan wants Imogen to lean on her. Imogen asks for a favor regarding summer school. Dr. Sullivan, chuckling, agrees to call in a recommendation for Imogen to be in the same class as her friends. This relieves Imogen.
Noa and Jen cleaned the tables while working. Shawn comes in to pick up his pizzas. Noa introduces Shawn to Jen, who is grateful for Noa who saved her in juvie. She loves Noa and Shawn is sure the sentiment is returned. Shawn and Noa have plans to meet up after Tabby's screening. They kiss before he leaves, though Jen watches them and then Noa.
Faran yells at Henry in his car over him interjecting himself when she tells him that she had the situation handled. She tells him that Rhodes made her captain, offering to see if she can get him a summer job at the pool. That wouldn't work for Henry because he can't swim. He'll figure out something to do. Kelly has been texting him about a project her youth group is doing since they need more guys. He might check that out.
The Little Liars gather outside the Orpheum where Tabby's film is on the marquee - Avenge. The girls are thrilled for Tabby and are happy to make time for the small and big things in their lives. Noa is impressed by Christian's bold romantic gesture. Tabby is a bit nervous since Christian hasn't seen her film yet. The content of which could make him change his mind and scare him off. Imogen is optimistic and they all link arms to enter the theater.
Kelly confronts Greg about spending time with Sandy. He's not screwing her yet. Sandy's a good listener and doesn't judge Greg like Kelly does. She doesn't put a lot of shit on him, either. He's supposed to meet her later to rehearse. She knows what happens at late-night rehearsals. She seductively tells him there are other things they can do for each other aside from sex. They begin to kiss as she tells him Sandy is off limits.
The Little Liars watch Avenge, starring Imogen, who takes a knife to "Chet" the rapist in the film before bludgeoning him with a knife. She then walks the halls of the school, covered in blood, with a crimson A carved in Chet's chest. The film ends and the girls all clap for Tabby. Christian meets them in the lobby to applaud Tabby for her film. They all make plans to meet up at Pinball Pizza for an after-party. Tabby and Christian have to close up, but she invites the girls to hang out. Imogen quickly says they all do the "stuff" they talked about. Imogen is going to the creamery to see if there's still a job opening, while Faran has to practice CPR on a dummy. Mouse volunteers Christian to walk Tabby home, with Noa adding how nice it is outside. He's down if Tabby is and she agrees. The girls slowly walk out of the Orpheum while giggling. Tabby goes for the checklist when she finds a rose atop it. She grins, believing it's from Christian.
Imogen enters the Millwood Creamery where she meets Johnny who gives her an application. He asks if she has experience and she adds she's a big fan of it. As he gets the application, her phone rings with an unknown caller. He asks her name and she smiles that she's Imogen Adams.
Christian asks Tabby about what lens she used. They both love to talk about their process, with him giving her a tip for fake blood. They talk about movies and laugh together. She thanks him for tonight. He finds her and her friends cool. She gets an unknown caller that she blames on a robocall. They continue to talk about bad movies.
Faran pours a glass of milk when she gets a call from an unknown caller.
Noa lays in bed with Shawn, thinking about sharing her cell bed with Jen. She gets a call from an unknown caller, but she ignores it.
Sandy waits alone for Greg to show up. He texts that he's not going to make it. She angrily texts him back on the way to her car. Bloody Rose leaps up behind her and stabs her to death. Her bloodied body falls to the ground as Bloody Rose keeps stabbing.
Mouse scrolls through SpookySpaghetti when she gets an unknown call. She declines it to continue scrolling, only for a video chat from Bloody Rose Waters to appear. The voice on the other side is distorted, but that of a woman. Mouse asks who it is, but the woman responds that Mouse knows who she is. Mouse asks what she wants. The woman coldly tells her to save her breath - she'll need it.
