Charles "Chip" Langsberry[1] was a major supporting character in Season 1 of the television series, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on Max. He is portrayed by Carson Rowland.
Chip was a major film buff attending Millwood High School who had a crush on fellow film buff Tabby Haworthe. Beneath his gentle exterior is a dark and damaged boy, harboring a dark secret.
Biography
Chip was born and raised in Millwood, Pennsylvania to Mrs. Langsberry. He was always interested in film which led him to accept a job with The Orpheum, the local second-run movie theater. He also attended Millwood High School, where he shared a film class with his co-worker and best friend, Tabby Haworthe. The pair had been friends for a while, and he secretly harbored an unreciprocated crush on her.
Chip and Tabby attended Karen Beasley's party in March of 2022, where he made a move on Tabby, though she rejected him. He left the party feeling upset and went to the beach to be alone, when he saw Imogen Adams drunk and by herself. He was upset over Tabby's rejection and raped Imogen, taking her underwear as a souvenir. Imogen got pregnant that night with their daughter. A few months later, over the summer of 2022, Chip attended a party in the woods where he saw Tabby hang out with the jocks. He wanted to be close with her so he sexually assaulted her that night.
Personality
Physical Appearance
Chip was a teenager with a tall, lean build and perfectly cut dark brown hair. He had blue eyes that are set behind thick lashes. He wore casual clothing with a hint of color, typically a colorful shirt paired with worn-out jeans.
Series
Season 1
In film class, Mr. Smithee roughly hands out papers detailing the students’ latest projects to partner and make a short film inspired by a classic film on the list. Tabby raises her hand, asking why there’s no directors of color much less only two women on the list. Chip chimes in, adding to Tabby’s cause. Mr. Smithee stops her, complimenting her love of film as admirable but the curriculum has been vetted by his colleagues and school board. While she is free to pursue and watch whatever films she wants, she must follow the classroom’s rules. Tabby agrees, and begins to announce her intent to start a film series at The Orpheum beginning with Jordan Peele’s movies. Mr. Smithee interrupts and the class resumes teaching. After school, Tabby arrives late at The Orpheum, apologizing to her boss Wes. He tells Chip to clean up the bathrooms but the latter says it is Tabby’s turn to do so. Wes, however, says Tabby is in charge of the popcorn and orders Chip to do it.[3]
In a flashback to six months ago, Tabby attends Karen Beasley's house party with Chip. He's hesitant to stay, but she rattles off a list of movies her should pretend he's in. Or he can get them some drinks. He asks Shawn Noble where the cups are. In the present day, Tabby shows Chip the video she made of Karen, which he's unsure about since it's majorly fucked up. Karen sent out videos before this, including animal torture in Jeffrey Dahmer's style. She's always been a monster, but this week is the next level. Chip always has her back. She thanks him and offers him a quid pro quo. He asks if she'll go to the spirit week dance with him, then, and she agrees as it'll be fun.
At The Orpheum, everyone takes their seats for the screening of Jordan Peele's double feature. The film starts rolling and Tabby gives Chip a thumbs-up. After the video plays, Wes goes into the theatre to see why Karen ran out crying. He sees Chip in the booth and scowls. He interrogates Chip in the lobby, about the video he played before the movie. Tabby admits it was her video and not Chip's. She asked Chip to show it and he tried to talk her out of it, but she wouldn't let him. Wes tells Chip to go home so he can talk to Tabby alone.
Chip attends the Spirit Week Dance, finding Tabby as she didn't meet him at the punch bowl like she was supposed to. She apologizes as they are trying to find Karen to apologize for the video. He agrees to be her wingman. They fail in finding Karen and opt to dance instead. Imogen stands off by herself and Tabby tells Chip it's a Perks alert. He doesn't mind and tells her to go. The girls walk over to Imogen and Tabby extends her hand first, inviting her to have the dance. She accepts and Tabby leads her to the dance floor, twirling her around. The group dances happily as their boys watch, later joining them. Imogen is crowned Spirit Queen, but the girls see Karen about to push paint off the balcony onto Imogen, and their incessant pointing catches Shawn's attention. He joins-in on the pointing and warning. The next thing he sees, is Karen falling off the balcony and landing on the stage, dead.[4] A few days later, Tabby urgently tries to find Chip at The Orpheum. Tabby is upset that Chip doesn’t have the drive containing Karen's video. He expresses uncertainty of it’s even still at the theater.[5]
Mr. Smithee assigns everyone a group project to write and direct a twist on a classic horror movie. Chip suggests a Sam Raimi film for their film project, such as The Evil Dead. Tabby rejects the idea as the scene where the woods basically rape the female character ruins the entire film for her. Sam Raimi isn't even on Mr. Smithee's approved list. However, the master of the macabre himself is on the list. Tabby tells the class what she and Chip have chosen for their project. It stems from the horror trope of female victims being attacked by masked male psychopaths. The foundation of almost every horror movie, and a line can be drawn straight back to the shower scene in Psycho. Smithee assumes she'll put another naked woman in the crosshairs of Norman Bates. She scoffs at the assumption. She and Chip are flipping the script to make the male character a victim of the female murderer. It will be horror from the point of view of the female gaze. Their stars are Faran and Greg.
Tabby meets with Faran, Chip, and Greg to go over the plan for breaking into the school. Chip will stay late and let them in through a side door. Tabby plans for the shoot to be done in two hours and stresses that she wants everyone to feel safe and supported. There shouldn't be any surprises. Faran asks what they are using for blood. It'll be corn syrup mixed with red food coloring, and the violence will be more implied then shown. Greg makes a crude comment about liking to swap bodily fluids. Tabby condemns the behavior as she doesn't want that bullshit on her set. Faran asks about the costumes, which Chip explains will be ready for them that day. Greg will be wearing a speedo as they're shooting around the nudity so it's more implied. Greg asks if they'll be supplying the condoms in case this turns into a porno. Faran is visibly uncomfortable and Tabby snaps at him. He apologizes as he's just joking and hears her about a safe set.
Tabby is ready to go again but wants to see Faran's intention in her eyes. Her intention being that she had dinner with Norman, was attracted to him, and in true slasher fashion, she's going to penetrate him - with her knife. She's going to stab him. They reset as Tabby picks up the camera. She does a close-up of Faran's face and shows the intensity in her eyes. She praises Faran for doing a great job. She tells her to relax while they go into Greg's coverage. He asks for context or if he's just supposed to shower. Tabby explains that his character had dinner with Marian, and she gave him wine but didn't have any herself. Maybe she even slipped something into his drink; she's vulnerable, a damsel in distress. While he's just showering, they'll be breaking the next taboo; showing a hot male body violated by the female falice. Chip needs five minutes before they go.
Chip shows Faran and Tabby his vision for the next scene. Faran points to Greg who is totally naked. He claims the speedo was uncomfortable and it would be more authentic this way. Tabby is angry as she wanted a safe set, and him naked is not safe or cool. Greg doesn't mind because there's no reason to be shy. It's not about him, it's disrespectful to his co-star. Greg asks if Faran minds and she admits that ballet is a lot raunchier than this. Tabby looks to Chip for support, but he thinks they can shoot around it since they are pressed for time. Tabby needs a break and leaves the locker room. When she returns, she sees Chip packing up the set with Greg and Faran having left. They were getting cold and wanted to go home so he finished the scene. He shot it but followed the storyboards exactly. She looks at him in disbelief but lies that it's fine.[6] Her cold shoulder the next day tells him otherwise. He chases after her in the hallway, asking what he did wrong. Tabby scolds Chip for shooting the scene as not invalided her female gaze. Chip apologizes. Tabby tells him to forget it and leaves him to join the girls.
He attends Imogen's Halloween Party, finding Tabby sitting out back alone. He offers her a bottle, to which she asks if it was open beforehand. He says he talked to Mr. Smithee, who gave them an extension for her to reshoot the scene. He volunteers to be Norman, willing to embarrass himself for her. Chip asks if she wants to get out of here to watch a movie, but she’s politely refuses, so he leaves.[7] Tabby opens up to Imogen that night, telling her about the night she was raped. She was working late at The Orpheum with Chip. This group of kids from school came in. She flashes back to seeing Greg Mantzoukas and Karen. He invites her to a bonfire party in the woods, behind the school. She wants to go so she says, asking an astonished Chip to cover for her. He's initially upset that she wants to party with a bunch of meat heads and their girlfriends. He ultimately caves and agrees to cover her shift.[8]
Nurse Simmons teaches health class, with their newest assignment being to take care of an infant simulator with a partner for a week. Imogen groans so Chip asks her to team up. He asks if it's a tag team or trade-off, so she sides with trade-off. She'll watch it tonight.
Wes and Chip greet Tabby at the snack counter in The Orpheum, laughing and discussing their newest idea for a double feature. Last House on the Left and its unlikely inspiration, Virgin Spring. She thinks those movies depict incredibly graphic rape scenes. Wes thinks she's missing the point, which is that they're violent but highly moral. She has to look at them as products of their respective times. Tabby clutches the pen in her hand as his words drone on. She stabs his hand and blood squirts everywhere, making both men scream. Back in reality, Wes tells Tabby that if she's going to attend film school she has to have critical distance. Her problem isn't that they exist, it's that bozos like them two venerate the films without having a clue on what they're actually saying about sexual violence. She asks if her and Chip's drama didn't teach him anything. She decides to take a break to work on her project, leaving the men speechless.
Imogen leaves her fake baby with the receptionist, Mrs. Bell, as she needs to pee. When she comes back, the baby is gone with Mrs. Bell not having moved it. The classes dismiss and students fill the halls, many carrying their fake babies. She begins to panic as she can't find her baby. She stops Chip as someone stole Clarisse, the baby she named. He recommends waiting a minute to get quiet. She'll be even more pathetic if she loses that baby. He assures her that she isn't pathetic. They hear Clarisse crying and find her in a storage room. When Imogen picks her up, she sees a note on the blanket saying "YOU'RE A BAD MOTHER". Chip quickly tears the note off the blanket. She asks him if they can do the tag team version of the assignment, so he agrees. She asks for a ride to an adoption agency after school. He clarifies that it's for her real baby.
They meet with Millwood Community Services in the Woodhouse Adoption Agency. She originally planned to keep her baby, but circumstances changed and now she's exploring all possibilities. The woman can talk her through scenarios, and is assuming that since Chip is there that he's in support of adoption. Imogen starts to protest his involvement until Chip cuts her off; whatever Imogen thinks is best for the baby is fine with him. In the parking lot, she asks Chip why he pretended to be the dad in there. He's not sure, though she seemed like she needed some support. She did, so she thanks him. He tells her not to mention it, though she doesn't have to tell her who the dad is, that's no one's business but hers. He then invites her to get some food.
They go to Pinball Pizza where they laugh over food and get to know one another. He talks about how he busted his dad's camera while trying to film a sequel to a film he loved. His dad said if he wanted to film more he had to get a job, so he got hired at The Orpheum. That's where he and Tabby bonded during the downtime between movies. He asks if she thinks babies like carnivals.
On the night of the Millwood Fall Carnival, Chip brings cotton candy to Imogen, who apologizes for not telling him that she can't ride the rides. He's fine with it as most rides make him wanna throw up, anyway. She watches a couple make out and he notices. He asks if she could, but she gently turns him down. He gets it but she doesn't think he does. He does, believing it's because he spends all his time watching weird esoteric movies, while crushing on his best friend for the pat three years. He's not boyfriend material. She assures him that's not it. Her reality is different, but he likes her, more and more, as she's a badass. Any guy would be so lucky to be with her. She cuts him off with a kiss. She likes him too.[9]
Back in school, Chip asks Imogen to join him and his family on Thanksgiving. While it's a tempting offer, she has plans with the Haworthe's for the holiday. She has a counter proposal though it's not glamorous. Every Thanksgiving week she and her mom volunteered at the soup kitchen. He eagerly agrees as he's so in. She asks him to go after school today and he agrees. They head there after school, and watch a worker diffuse an argument, which triggers a memory for her. Chip asks if Imogen is okay and she is, she's just having a moment.[10]
A few weeks later, Nurse Simmons gives Imogen a pregnancy check up, though this time Chip is there. He knows it's usually just the two of them, but he wants to be supportive. A pointed look from Nurse Simmons prompts him to promise he won't say anything else. Everything seems to be on track for the 38th week of a pregnancy, and it won't too much longer before the birth. The only thing that concerns her is Imogen's blood pressure, which is a little high. Imogen likens her whole life to being one big anxiety attack. Nurse Simmons reminds her that hypertension can lead to risk. It is of paramount importance that she stay calm and have no outside stressors.
Tabby asks Wes for advice on her short film, leaning on the counter of The Orpheum as they talk. He thinks it's awesome and offers to lend her some of his equipment for her shoot. This excites her, though he reminds her to be super careful with his camera. As they plot over the story boards, Chip watches from the background, clutching his mop. Sidney angrily arrives, telling Wes to get away from her daughter. Tabby starts to protest but Sidney is adamant. She questions how old he is, averaging 30, though he lies about being in his 20s. She sneers at his making a teenage girl work late, giving her rides home. He was helping her with her shot list, which she thinks is his grooming her and preying on her. He made a move on her one time but apologized right after. That's enough for Sidney, who calls him a motherfucker and plans to call the police. Tabby finally gets through to her mother, insisting she stop to listen to her. Sidney is protecting her from this rapist, with Wes holding his hands up in an act if innocence. Tabby pulls her mom outside, though she continues to hurl insults at Wes, including that if he comes within 10 feet of her daughter, she'll cut his fucking dick off. Wes walks off as Chip stands on the indoor steps.
Tabby talks to Chip about her mom's outburst. Chip asks if Wes ever tried anything with her. He did once, but nothing happened. She asks if he's jealous but he denies it. She thinks he's into Imogen, but it's only because Tabby wouldn't give her a shot. Tabby wants to make sure he's really into Imogen because she's into him. He assures her that he is. Tabby doesn't want to see her friend get hurt. He doesn't want her to get hurt with Wes. He's said things about her before, like how he wants to fuck her. He's a creep that Chip doesn't trust, so she should be careful. Tabby goes back to cleaning the posters.
Tabby does her homework in her room as she recalls her conversation with Sidney about a rapist being someone a survivor knows. She looks at her hand and remembers Wes holding it in the car. She instinctively curls it up. She knows Wes wasn't at the parties. She dies down and flashes back to Karen's party. Chip joins her on the couch and encourages her to drink with him. He's a sloppy drunk, as Tabby points out. She starts to leave to get him water but he stops her. He kisses her but she tells him to wait. She doesn't think of him that way. They're friends, best friends. He grimly realizes he probably should have figure that out by now. He readies to leave and stops her from coming with him. He would rather be alone right now. Tabby remembers Imogen's story of being raped after Karen's fucked up house party in March.[11]
December 14th. Tabby questions Wes about where Chip is. He's in the booth, though she adds she doesn't need him, she's just curious. She asks if he remembers over the summer when they showed Jaws and Jaws II. He remembers that she and Chip both bailed. Tabby knows she went to a party, but asks where Chip went. Wes doesn't know for sure, though he assumed he went to the same party. She asks who is closing tonight, learning that it's Chip, since Wes is going to Pittsburgh. Tabby shares her suspicion with Imogen and they con their way into the Langsberry home to snoop through Chip's things. Tabby finds a crate of movies that are weird and gross. They are hardcore rape-y horror movies hidden in the back of his closet like a dirty little secret. But otherwise, no evidence. Imogen asks how sure Tabby is about her feelings, and she admits to being sickeningly sure. Imogen wants to see how guilty Chip feels about what he did.
They head to The Orpheum where they talk to Chip, who sees their solemn faces. He asks who died and they admit that no one died, but someone is going to be arrested. He asks who it is and Imogen reveals that it's him, for what he did to them. He's confused by their allegations. The night of Karen's party, the one Tabby and him went too together, Chip left after she turned his advances down. He was drunk and upset. She asks where he went afterwards. He pauses for a moment before saying he went home. Imogen asks if he went to the beach where she was laying passed out and helpless. Tabby asks about the night of the bonfire party, the one where he followed her. Then, when she was walking home, he raped her. Chip physically moves backwards as he vehemently denies that he did it, he would never do anything like that. He tries to walk towards them but Tabby puts her hand out, stopping him from coming near them. Wes remembers him leaving the theater early while Greg Mantzoukas saw him at the bonfire party.
Even if he was there, that doesn't mean that he would do that - he would never do that. Imogen laments that he did; he raped Tabby and he raped her. Besides, they have proof. She caresses her stomach as their baby matches his DNA, which they obtained at the blood drive. He calls them fucking crazy. Tabby asks why he did it, wanting him to help them understand. He can either tell them, or they can have the conversation with Sidney and Sheriff Beasley. They don't want that, especially for Imogen's baby, as she doesn't want everyone knowing. They do need closure so they can move on. Chip is the only person who can give that to them. So again, they ask why he did it - he owes them that much. Chip listens to their pleas, filling with emotion as they speak. He takes a moment before looking at Tabby. He admits that she didn't want to be with him. But she was willing to go to some kegger in the woods with those jocks. When he saw her walking home she was a mess. He just wanted to be close to her. Tabby listens in surprise and disgust. She asks if he thinks that made them close. Imogen, barely holding back tears, asks for him to explain what happened to her. He pauses another moment before explaining. After Karen's party, he went to the beach to be alone. He saw Imogen but didn't want to hurt her, either. Imogen says that he did, he hurt both of them.
Tabby wonders how he could do it as he was her best friend and he stole from her. She doesn't feel safe anymore. She never feels safe. If a guy gets near her she imagines the worst, that he'll do what he did. Imogen asks how many other girls he attacked. He swears it's just the two of them and he won't do it again. Now that he's confessed, they're taking his ass down. He thought they would let them get away with it in exchange for closure, but it was a lie. This year has made them very good liars. Imogen calls him sick and demented. He partnered up with her in health class when he knew this baby was his. He told her that he liked her and made her like him too. Then, he let her kiss him. That is not sick, that is psychotic. Chip reels from their words as A approaches from behind Chip. The girls gasp in terror and stagger away from the villain. Chip turns to face A, who is inches from his body. He asks who the fuck that is and moves behind the girls. He shouts out “fuck this” as he runs out of The Orpheum. Tabby and Imogen face A, the latter taking ragged breaths as Tabby clings to her arm. Imogen tells A that Chip hurt both of them, the same way that Tom Beasley hurt Angela Waters. After a moment, A stalks forward, but moves past them on his way out of the theater. The girls hug one another tightly.
A lures Tabby and the other Little Liars to Millwood High School for their trial. Tabby goes to the film room which is full of candles illuminating the room. The projector shines red light through the room. On a desk is a card from A with a long knife next to it. The message states: CHIP HURT YOU. HE'S YOUR BULLY. CARVE AN A INTO HIS CHEST." Tabby looks up to see Chip restrained in the chair, duct tape around his mouth. A huge chalkboard behind him reads “PUNISH THE GUILTY”. She looks at him as he screams at her through the tape. She couldn't bring herself to hurt him, showing him mercy.
Following the events of the evening, both Clanton and Chip are arrested for their respective crimes, though Chip makes bail on Christmas. At the Langsberry home, someone rings the doorbell and Chip answers. A leaps forward, raising a butcher knife above his head.[12]
Season 2
News of Chip's murder at the hands of an escaped Archie Waters spreads fast around town, with Kelly contacting Imogen first to warn her of the masked killers escape. Archie is eventually apprehended and taken back into custody. As a way of processing the trauma she endured, Tabby writes and directs a new film she calls Avenge - a self-described "feminist rape revenge story". Imogen stars in it as the female lead who eventually murders her attacker, Chet, in the final scene. The film gets rejected by festivals, so Tabby decides to upload it to Vimeo, where Millwood residents are quick to put the pieces together of Chip being "Chet". Consequently, Mrs. Langsberry demands Tabby take down her film under thread of suing for defamation. Tabby takes it down after reading comments from people that are protecting Chip and calling him hot or Tabby a liar. Mrs. Langsberry then writes an article for the Millwood Mail where she labels her son as the "forgotten victim" of Archie Waters. Enraged by this, Tabby misconstrues Dr. Sullivan's advice by spray painting "RAPIST" in red across Chip's grave.[13]
