'A' is for A-l-i-v-e[]
Emily and the liars and Mona open the trunk of Wilden's car and discover a dead pig inside. Back at the Hastings', the girls confront Mona about her actions. The ask how she got Wilden's car out of the lake. Mona says she didn't. She reveals to them which crimes she did commit and which she didn't, including that Lucas gave Emily the massage (in Touched by an 'A'-ngel) and that she did not push Ian off the bell tower, but wishes she knew who did. She says that Jenna knew Shana before she came to town and that she thinks Shana is in love with Jenna. Mona states that the two of them are afraid of Melissa Hastings. When CeCe went to visit Mona at Radley, Mona believed she was Ali because she was being given the wrong medications. She recruited Toby to the "A-Team" when he got the job in Bucks County.
The next morning, the girls wake up and realize Mona is gone. They think she drugged them because they don't remember falling asleep the night before. Then Mona appears, bringing coffee and breakfast for the girls. She, of course, knows what drink each girl likes, and mentions to Emily she has her own set of keys to Emily's car. Mona is determined to find out who Red Coat is and she’s expecting help from them. Mona agrees to take the girls to the lair to prove she has nothing to hide. On the way, the girls hit a road block in town. They don't understand why the area is crawling with cops and onlookers until they see a body covered by a sheet next to the car they saw last night. Darren Wilden is dead and the girls are sure to become the prime suspects. When the girls reach the lair, currently existing inside an RV in a trailer park, Mona shows them footage from the night of the Halloween train party to prove she wasn't the one who drugged Aria and put her in a box. Wilden is revealed to be the Queen of Hearts and was talking to a second Queen of Hearts whom Mona claims is Spencer’s sister, Melissa, but before we are able to see her face, the footage cuts off and the files on the computer start disappearing. Someone is hacking Mona's computer. The girls hear their names being spoken outside so they go to investigate and find a group of little girls playing. They each have a doll named after each of the Liars and Mona. When questioned, the girls tell Mona her friend Alison gave them the dolls shortly after Mona moved in to the trailer park.
In Emily's room, Hanna tells Emily she plans to keep Mona close, as the old saying goes, "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer". Pam comes in and mentions that Alison’s mother moving back to her old house, even though Jason had said she hated that place. To Hanna, this is even more proof that Alison is still alive and it really was she who dragged them out of the fire at the lodge, but Emily still doesn't believe that is possible. Emily takes Pam's gift basket to Jessica DiLaurentis to welcome her back to the neighborhood. Jessica finds it refreshing to hear Emily say Ali's name since most people tend to avoid it in her presence. She asks Emily to help her bring some boxes containing some of Alison's belongings into Alison's old bedroom. Emily finds it odd that Jessica is setting up the bedroom as if Alison is alive, and afterwards, calls to tell Hanna about the creepy shrine.
The next day, at school, Emily and Aria are having lunch. Aria watches Fitz interacting with some students across the way and tells Emily she's not ready to move on and start dating other people yet. When she realizes Vice Principal Hackett is watching her and eavesdropping, she pretends to explain a passage from The Grapes of Wrath to Emily. Later, at Emily's house, Paige tells Emily that she has been accepted to Stanford University on a full-ride scholarship. She asks Emily to go to California with her, and leave all the craziness of Rosewood behind. At first Emily says she planned to go to Danby, but Paige convinces her that they could start over in California and have a great life together there. Emily happily changes her mind and decides to apply to Stanford with Paige. After Emily bids Paige goodbye in her car, Jenna shows up outside Emily's house. Jenna tells Emily that Wilden was a friend of hers ever since she moved to Rosewood. Emily notices Jenna's hand has a bad burn on it, but Jenna offers up no information about this. She asks Emily to pass on a message to Toby if something were to happen to her. Since Ian, Garrett, and Wilden are all dead, and all three saw Alison on the night she died, Jenna thinks she may be next. The message is that she never meant to hurt Toby.
The next day, Emily, along with the girls, attends Wilden's funeral. They see the casket being brought into the church and decide to try and get to it before the viewing starts and whatever evidence is inside is discovered by all the cops in attendance. The girls spot a mysterious woman wearing a face-obscuring black veil enter the church. Jessica DiLaurentis tells the girls they all look very pretty and invites them to sit next to her up front. There is no room left for Mona so she sits elsewhere. Jenna walks in on the arm of an unknown man and the woman in the black veil sits behind them before the service begins. After the service, the girls watch veiled woman get into a towncar, still wondering who she is. A man approaches them and introduces himself as Detective Holbrook, a detective with the State Police brought in to investigate the murders of Garrett Reynolds and Darren Wilden. The girls mention that Wilden liked to harass them, which Det. Holbrook already knew and questions why they would attend the funeral of man who acted so inappropriately toward them. Emily lies that they are supporting their local police department. Holbrook doesn't seem to buy it, and mentions he's one of the good guys before departing. The girls then receive an "A" message containing a video of them touching Wilden's car the night before his body was discovered. They realize this was A's plan all along - to make them look guilty and responsible for Wilden's murder.
Turn of the Shoe[]
Emily and the other liars are at the Brew, discussing the Lady in Black and Melissa's whereabouts. Emily and Hanna agree that Melissa is The Lady in Black while Spencer is using food to see if the geography is even possible for the person who jumped out of a plane could save Aria, Hanna and Emily from the fire. Hanna and Aria get into an argument about if it was Ali who saved the girls from the fire. Spencer is also a bit skeptical if it even was Ali that she saw coming out of the plane. Mona comes into the Brew. Hanna accuses Mona of putting Hanna’s mom’s phone in Wilden’s coffin. Mona says she didn't and says she will do anything to prove that all the girls are in this together, so Spencer says to take them to A's RV. Mona drives up to where the RV is, with the girls in separate cars behind her. The girls arrive and Mona opens the gate to where the RV was, and is in shock when the RV is gone, and the girls think that Mona has taken it somewhere else. Hanna and Spencer leave in their car, while Emily and Aria wait and watch Mona. Mona gets into her car and is attacked from behind by a hooded figure with an Ali mask. Emily and Aria see that Mona’s car lights are flashing, so they start walking to the car. Mona finally gets the flashlight and whacks A with it and jumps out of car, and onto to the ground, gasping for breath. Aria and Emily run over to her. Mona’s car starts up and A drives the car and tries to run over the three. They jump onto the rocks and Emily lands on one of them, badly injuring her shoulder.
The next day, in the computer lab at school, Emily and Paige are talking about their dorm in Stanford, assuming that Emily will get into Stanford for her swimming talent. Paige shows Emily a computer generated model of the dorm room she envisions them sharing at Stanford. Paige hugs her in the excitement and Emily winces in pain. She tells Paige she just slept weird, not wanting to reveal how she actually hurt her shoulder. When Emily remarks she might not be able to swim in the next meet, Paige insists that she has to; her scholarship to Stanford might depend on it. Later, at her home, Emily is on the phone with Hanna. Hanna tells her about Ashley's muddy shoes she found under the sink, but Emily doesn't think much of it. Emily's mind is focused on the swim meet. She swallows a prescription pain-killer from her parents' medicine cabinet, then takes a few extra with her in case she needs another one later.
The next day, Emily is getting ready for the big swim meet in the locker room, and takes more pain medication. Shana comes up to her asking if she has an extra swim cap. She asks Emily why her friends think she was friends with Wilden and Emily tells her she doesn't like to talk before the race. Shana tells Emily that she has her eye on the Stanford scholarship too, and may the best girl win. While Emily is swimming, she starts to get dizzy and the pool floor gets blurry. She misjudges the distance of the wall and crashes into it head first. She's rushed out of the school. The ER people ask her how she hurt her shoulder and she says she fell off her bike. Later at Emily's house, Emily tells Paige that the painkillers are the reason she slammed into the wall during the race. Emily then reveals to Paige how she messed up her shoulder while saving Aria and Mona from 'A', Paige asks why she kept it from her and Emily says she just wants to get away from all the problems with A and just be together with Paige. She doesn't want Paige to worry about her.
Cat's Cradle[]
The episode begins with Hanna, Aria, Spencer, and Emily at The Brew discussing Tippi and Hanna's mom. Hanna reminds the girls that Ashley didn't kill Wilden and they all agree. Emily mentions that she has a doctor appointment scheduled for her shoulder tomorrow, then explains she was able to bring Ali's old notebooks and journals and things because she snuck them out past Mrs. Dilaurentis' along with all of Tippi's stuff. Spencer asks Emily to hide Ali's stuff so Mona doesn't find it and start asking questions. Mona wasn't at school that day, and no one knows where she has been, making them nervous. In the box of notebooks, Hanna finds a mask. Then, Melissa walks in The Brew. The girls are surprised that she is back because they thought she would be gone for good after they found Wilden. They wonder if what Mona said about her being the other Queen of Hearts is true or not.
The next day, Emily goes to the doctor about her shoulder and he prescribes her the same pain medication that Emily was taking that caused the bad reaction while swimming. Dr. Vargas remarks that he doesn't see that medication in her file, and Emily, realizing she's caught in a lie, pretends she has only heard that hydrocodone can cause a bad reaction. Later, Aria, Emily, and Spencer are leaving school. Aria tells them about her mom considering the trip to Austria and how she can't even imagine her mom being a continent away. Spencer tells them she couldn't find any information about the number Tippi gave them, but she's not giving up. Emily says she started going through Ali's notebooks and asks the other girls if they want to come over tonight and search them together. Spencer says she can't because she promised Toby she would help him with something. Outside school, Emily's mom come up to them and tells Emily she's giving her a ride home. She is angry because the doctor called and asked if Emily has been taking her mom's medication. Emily denies it, but Pam says she checked the bottle and can see pills are missing. When Emily tries to walk away, Pam grabs her arm and starts yelling, making a scene, so Emily gets in the car and leaves.
Later that night, Aria helps Emily go through Alison's notebooks and she asks Emily if she told her mom about taking her pills, and Emily says yes, she had to. Aria is looking at the mask they found and she notices a second mask underneath that looks like Alison. They notice a marking on the inside - the web address of the Hector Lime, the creator of the mask. The girls call Hanna to come over and Hanna recognizes the mask they uncovered as the same type of mask that Mona was wearing on the Halloween train. She is not willing to wait for Spencer to call them back. The three of them decide to go to the studio where the mask was made to find some answers. It is dark when they arrive at the studio and they wonder if Ali came to this place alone. The studio is creepy and Hector is even creepier. He invites them inside. Next thing Emily knows, Hector is spreading plaster over her face and telling her it'll be over before she knows it. He tells the girls that Alison wanted masks because she wanted all her friends to look like her. Hector also says that Alison told him to break the mold when he was finished, and he did. When they leave, Emily says she bets that was how Alison felt to be buried alive. Hanna then shows the girls the mold that she stole from in the studio.
Back at home, Pam informs Emily that Family Services called her. They want to interview Pam about Emily because someone reported that she was "excessive" with Emily outside of school. She says Family Services suspects that Emily's shoulder, her ulcer, and her trouble with the police is caused by family troubles at home. Emily texts Aria and tells her that "A" called Family Services on her mom. Later, Emily gets a message from "A" of a picture of her mom that was edited to make her look like she is behind prison bars. Pam comes in and tells Emily that her dad is coming home from the army because Family Services called him too.
Face Time[]
Wayne returns to Rosewood from his tour due to the issues with Family Services. He greets Emily and Pam solemnly and Emily leaves for school. At school, Emily joins the others and tells the girls that her father is home because "A" called Family Services on her family. Aria is concerned her family is next. The bell rings and the girls all go inside as Holbrook and Tanner watch on. At lunch with the girls, Emily expresses her worries over her issues with Family Services. She mentions how her father wants her to come home immediately after school. Spencer is shocked that Family Services thinks there's something wrong with Emily's family. Emily herself is not sure what they think. She thinks that her little lies, about getting hurt and about the pills are what caused the problem. That night, Spencer and Emily talk on the phone about questioning Melissa, and Spencer notes that if they want Melissa to provide any answers, then they need some type of “leverage.” Emily hears her mom and dad talking about the issues with Family Services and say that they know that Emily is lying to them.
The next day, Emily meets with Dr. Vargas and asks him if he spoke to Family Services. He said that he did and she tells him that there is no problem at home and that he should take back whatever he said. Dr. Vargas doesn’t seem to believe her and as she is about to leave, he tells her that the x-ray for her shoulder shows a partial tear in her rotator cuff. He says that if it doesn’t heal, she might need surgery, and that the outcome for athletes like her is unpredictable. Spencer, Emily and Aria meet up at the Brew and Spencer tells them that she wants to find out what Melissa does when she comes face to face with her mask. Will she go to Shana for some reason, straight to the mask-maker, or somewhere else? Emily then sees Paige and goes to talk to her. Emily tells Paige about what the doctor said about her shoulder, and that she won’t be able to swim any time soon. The girls embrace.
Later that night, Emily speaks with her parents. They question her about how she got the injury on her shoulder, and she refuses to tell them how it happened. Her parents demand her to tell what happened since Family Services thinks someone at hurt her and they have a right to know as her parents. Things begin to escalate and Emily tells them that she visited Dr. Vargas to explain to him that no one at home hurt her. Her dad tells her not to see that man and asks if things are happening again (meaning the messages from "A" or any sort of bullying). Her parents are worried that now Emily can't swim, how will she pay for college and Emily tries to convince them that she'll get another job. Her parents are concerned and ask her if the bullying has started up again. Emily yells that she doesn’t know and runs out of the house.
Emily visits Paige at the pool and tells her about what is going on with her family and how she is worried that she will never be able to swim again. Paige consoles Emily, telling her that they can find another dream but Emily doesn't think she can sit in the stands and watch as Paige wins. Paige tells her that she will swim again. Emily is worried that she might need surgery and that it's outcome is unpredictable. Paige thinks that unpredictable is not as bad, "Unpredictable can be good. Look at us". Paige tells her that everything will be okay and walks her home. At Emily's house, it is discovered that someone called the police on her family about a domestic disturbance. Emily tells the police that there was a misunderstanding while Paige looks on concerned.
Gamma Zeta Die![]
Wayne stops by Emily's room. He informs her that Pam already left for the gym, which Emily deduces is to avoid the neighbors. He then brings up the college issue college issue. Emily says that without swimming, she is average, and so, even if they could afford to pay for college, she wouldn't get in. Wayne tells her that there is nothing average about her, and that he will do whatever he can to help her. At school, in the hallway, Spencer, Aria and Emily discuss Spencer’s admission counselor. Aria mentions the phone number that Tippi sang, and how all they know is that it belongs to York County. Spencer looks through her college catalogue and notices Cicero College, a college in York County whose area code and phone number prefix match the one that Tippi sang.
At The Brew, Emily is on the phone with Aria who tells her about Ella's "accident" orchestrated by 'A', Aria tells Emily over the phone that Ella was taken to the hospital, but is home now and resting. Aria is now even more adamant that Ella goes to Austria. Emily then gets back to work and strikes up a conversation with Brendon McGowan, Spencer's private admissions counselor, who is waiting for Spencer to arrive. Emily picks his brain about her college options and he is more than happy to walk her through the selection process. He offers to go through a list of some colleges till Spencer arrives. Spencer arrives at the Brew and sits down with Emily and Brendon. She tells Brendon that she wants to visit Cicero College. He is surprised because he was under the impression Spencer was only interested in Ivy League schools. Brendon agrees to take Spencer to visit Cicero and Emily decides to tag along. While Emily's packing for her overnight stay Cicero, Wayne walks in. He gives her some money and tells Emily to enjoy herself. Emily tells him that she got paid and can manage on her own but Wayne is stubborn and tells her to buy something for herself she normally wouldn't.
At Cicero College, Spencer and Emily talk with Brendon about the campus tour. When he steps away, Spencer makes it clear to Emily that she is there to solve this phone number mystery and would never dream of attending a small school like Cicero for real. When Brendon returns, Spencer makes an excuse to follow some leads, leaving Emily and Brendon to tour the school on their own. That night, Spencer and Emily meet back up and head to Greek Row, where a party is going on at a sorority that Emily insists on visiting. She admits that the real reason she is at Cicero is to ask the sorority sisters about the possibility of getting a scholarship. Spencer rudely says that Emily's flirting with Brendon all makes sense now, and that she conveniently failed mention to him that she's gay. Emily retorts that Spencer did the same thing with Andrew to get back on the decathlon team and that she couldn't understand what she's going through right now since she will always have a safety net of her parents' money to fall back on. Before the fight can escalate further, they are regaled with a spontaneous a capella song by the sorority sisters of Gamma Zeta Chi. At the party, Emily speaks with a member of the sorority, Marissa, about how to apply. Just then, he notices a strange paddle and mask on the wall and Marissa informs her that it belonged to Mrs. Grunwald, the sorority’s house mother who had been fired years ago. She mentions that nothing could get past that woman and that she somehow knew when girls were planning to sneak out before they even knew it themselves. Emily spots Hanna across the room and begins to follows her, but is interrupted by by Brendon. When he offers to help her find her friend and takes her hand, Emily finally admits she has a girlfriend and isn’t interested. Brendon looks disappointed, but agrees to help her search the woods anyway. Later, as Emily and Spencer look on, Hanna is caught burying the gun and is arrested.
Under The Gun[]
At school, Emily talks to Hanna over the phone, who is stuck at home until the District Attorney calls. Hanna informs Emily that she is facing up to 7 years in prison. Emily thinks it is time for Hanna to tell her parents about 'A' but Hanna is resistant because she is not sure if her mom is actually responsible for Wilden's death. Emily hangs up when Shana walks into the locker room wearing a Sharks sweatshirt. She explains she has enrolled at Rosewood High mid-semester because they have a better swim program than her old private school and so better chances for a scholarship. Shana notices a flyer advertising the Brew's open mic night and asks Emily if it's too late to sign up. Emily arrives at The Brew and tells Aria and Spencer about how Hanna is waiting at home to hear from the DA. She informs them that the cops are testing the gun that Hanna found. She also tells them that Shana has enrolled at Rosewood High and taken her spot on the swim team. They think that now that Melissa is in London, who Mona told them Shana was afraid of, Shana has nothing to be scared of and so has moved to Rosewood. Just then, someone drops a tray. Emily tells them that he is the new guy she has to train. As Aria leaves to help the new guy, Spencer and Emily apologize to each other. Mona storms into the Brew and confronts the girls. She gives Spencer the opportunity to have this conversation in private, but Spencer refuses. Mona says that she has been away because she has been tracking down the missing RV and declares that Toby took it, and Spencer covered for him. The other girls believe Mona is lying, but Spencer admits it. Aria and Emily go back to Emily's house and talk about why Spencer would lie to them. They believe that there has to be a valid reason for Toby to do what he did. They think if they had the RV, Hanna wouldn't be in such a mess and that Mona may have some proof that Ashley is innocent. Just then Hanna calls Aria.
Later that night, Emily visits Hanna at her house, using homework as an excuse to see her. Hanna tells her she feels like she's in purgatory. Emily wants Hanna to hand over the footage from Wilden's dash cam because it proves Shana and Jenna are connected to Wilden, giving the police 2 additional suspects besides Ashley. Hanna thinks "A" will retaliate if she gives the hard drive to the cops, but Emily wants to turn it in anonymously. Hanna reluctantly gets the hard drive out of her jewelry box and gives it to Emily.
The next day, Emily goes to the police station and hangs some flyers for The Brew's open mic night. When Lt. Tanner walks away, she leaves a copy of the Wilden's dash cam footage on Lt. Tanner’s desk with an anonymous note attached. At school, Spencer tells Emily that she called the sorority. The sorority told her that Carla Grunwald, the house mother, used to disappear from the house and reappear out of nowhere. Spencer thinks that Mrs. Grunwald talked to Ali in that room. However, Emily is mad that Spencer still won't tell them why she lied about Toby taking the RV. Emily walks away and notices Shana practicing violin in the music room. Later, Emily approaches Mona at school demanding information about this new "A" they're all facing. Mona reminds Emily that "A" is now in control of the lair which contains tons of evidence against them. One wrong move and everything goes up in flames.
At The Brew, While a singer performs on stage at open mic night, Emily offers Aria a choice of pastries - sympathy food to help her get over the whole situation with Connor. Emily selflessly put Connor on garbage duty, which lifts Aria's spirits a bit. Spencer arrives and tells them about what has happened in Ravenswood. Lt. Tanner shows up and tells Emily to find someone to cover her shift; her presence is requested at the police station. Confused, Emily leaves with Lt. Tanner. At the station, Lt. Tanner shows Emily a CD which had been left on her desk anonymously about an hour after Emily had been seen their posting flyers for open mic night. The handwriting on the note matches a card from Emily found on Pam Fields' desk. A video of Red Coat wearing a black wig and an Emily mask, holding a sign that says GUILTY plays. Emily realizes that "A" switched the videos after she left and tells Lt. Tanner that it must be a bizarre prank. Lt. Tanner leaves, but says that they’ll talk later.
Crash and Burn, Girl![]
The girls are over at Hanna's house helping her deal with her mother's arrest. Emily's shoulder is still hurting her, and Spencer is still not ready to reveal what's going on with Toby and "A". Aria is glad Emily and Spencer are talking again. The three of them strategize on how to get Hanna to eat and agree to be there for her for whatever she needs. Later, Emily's mom stops by her room to tell her she has made an appointment for prolotherapy treatment for Emily's shoulder. Insurance won't cover the first few sessions, so Pam is concerned about they will pay for it, but won't let Emily contribute her own money. Physical therapy hasn't been helping, so Pam emphasizes how important it is to try this new treatment. She tells Emily she needs to focus on healing her shoulder, and let Hanna spend time with her father.
Emily talks to Hanna at school about where Shana might be hiding and when she'll pop up again. Some boys nearby are staring at Hanna because her mom was arrested. Emily starts to get in their faces, but Ezra steps in. After school, Emily talks to Pam at the station and tries to suss out if Lt. Tanner told her about the video of the person wearing the Emily mask. She gives Emily the insurance card for her appointment that afternoon. Some detectives stop by Pam's desk and have her lock up the key to Wilden's apartment in the evidence box. Emily asks if they are investigating other suspects besides Ashley. Pam tells her the investigation is ongoing. When Pam steps away to print directions to the clinic, Emily plots to steal the key out of the evidence box.
Aria and Spencer get together at Aria's. Emily rushes in and tells them to hurry up- tonight, they are breaking into Wilden's apartment. Wilden's apartment is a big mess. Spencer points out that the cops had already been there searching for clues about his murder. Aria hands out gloves so they don't leave any fingerprints behind and Emily, Aria and Spencer split up to look around. The phone rings and spooks them. The girls don't turn up much in their search. They notice there aren't very many personal items or knick-knacks around the apartment, though Aria points out Wilden's 'film collection' counts as rather personal. Then the girls spot a box on the floor. They open it and find a bunch of rotten steaks. There's a note inside that says, "Can't wait to see you at our little barbecue. Kisses, A".
The next day, Emily goes back to the station to return the key, but the cops have already noticed it missing. They are searching through Pam's desk and Emily overhears that if they don't find that key, they are going to have a problem. Back at home, Pam asks Emily why she rescheduled her appointment with the clinic. She lies she had to help Hanna with something. Pam understands Hanna is in a tough situation, but getting treatment for her injury should be Emily's number one priority. Emily apologizes, then Pam tells her she has been suspended from work and leaves to call her husband. Later, at night, Emily is unable to sleep. She overhears her mom talking to Wayne about being suspended without pay. She doesn't know how they are going to make ends meet and wonders if she should be looking for another job while things at the station are sorted out. Rightfully feeling guilty, Emily starts to go downstairs with the key she stole, but before she can, a car comes crashing through the living room. Pam dives out of the way and Emily comes running to help.
The Guilty Girl's Handbook[]
Emily and Pam are temporarily staying at a motel because of the car which drove through their living room in the previous episode. All they know is that it was a stolen car and no driver was seen fleeing the scene. Pam tells Emily not to miss the appointment she has with Mr. Fitz to talk about college. Emily texts Spencer, Aria, and Hanna that they're okay, and also asks about how Hanna's mom is.
At school, Ezra is on the phone with Malcolm when Emily walks into the classroom. Ezra ends the call when he spots Emily and he and Emily begin talking. He is surprised she showed up to their meeting after hearing about what happened to her house. He says he's sorry and asks if they have any leads. Ezra brings up how last year Emily and her friends were dodging some serious threats which Mona ultimately confessed to, and asks if anything similar is happening again. At first Emily doesn't respond, but then denies that anything is going on and quickly changes the subject by asking about a college. Emily thinks she'll have a hard time getting into a good college since she can't swim anymore. Ezra says she has a better shot than most people because of the work she did in Haiti over the summer. He asks her if she's in touch with any of her old supervisors, and she says there was one named Zoe. Ezra tells her to get in contact with Zoe and get a recommendation letter.
Later that day, Zoe approaches Emily outside the Brew. Emily says it's great to see her and gives her a hug. She apologizes for losing touch, but Zoe understands and asks how she's been dealing with losing Maya. Emily replies that still misses her. Zoe recalls how devastated Emily had been last summer, but how she threw herself into her work, and pulls out her phone to show her a picture she had taken. Zoe praises Emily's work ethic and Emily asks where Zoe will be going this summer. She says Nicaragua and asks if she'd like to come. Emily tells Zoe about hurting her shoulder and not being able to swim. Zoe suggests they find a less physical role for Emily on the Nicaragua trip, but Emily says she will be fine by then. Zoe says that she could write Emily a glowing recommendation in her sleep. Just then, Pam walks up to them to talk to Emily, and apologizes for interrupting. Pam greets Zoe before telling Emily that they won't be back in their home for months. Pam asks Emily to drop something off at the police station, and she agrees, to spare Pam from having to her former colleagues. Zoe is sorry to hear Emily is living in a hotel and has so much going on. Emily asks for the form to sign up for the Nicaragua trip next summer and Zoe happily hands it over.
Emily comes home to their motel room and finds her mom has bought some groceries. Emily tells her she dropped off the insurance papers at the precinct and says they are going to want her back, but Pam is going to look for other work in the meantime. Emily is excited to tell her mom about going to Nicaragua next summer with Habitat for Humanity, and Pam starts crying, probably because she's upset about Emily growing up and leaving, in combination with their money troubles and their house being damaged. Emily hugs and comforts her mother. Later, Emily also gets a text. Emily, Aria, Spencer, Hanna, Caleb, Veronica, and Jake go to the police station. The four girls and Veronica all look shocked as they see Mona sitting in an interrogation room. Mona smiles at them as the blinds are closed, leaving them all to wonder what Mona is up to.
Into the Deep[]
Paige and Emily discuss Mona's confession. Paige believes she could have done it, with her track record of hitting Hanna with a car. She changes the subject and invites Emily to come with her to her aunt's lake house for a fun night just between the two of them. She presents Emily with an early birthday present, a business card for a well-established swimming trainer called Dominic Russo. Paige claims she has made an appointment for Emily this afternoon to see him in Philly. Emily doesn't see swimming in her future, but Paige convinces Emily to consider all of her options. She says Emily can take a year off of college to train instead of going to a state school she doesn't want to go to. Emily, hesitant, reminds Paige that she can't swim, but Paige says that it's not forever. Emily agrees to go, if it means she could spend her college years with Paige.
Emily visits the trainer, who tells her about the rigorous program. Emily is not afraid of a little hard work. Dominic asks to see her recruiting video. Dominic watches Emily's recruiting video and critiques her form. He points out some issues, but says he sees a lot of potential. He'd like to get started right away. Emily is excited to start, as soon as her shoulder heals. Dominic was not aware Emily had an injury. If she requires surgery, he wouldn't put her back in the pool for 6 months, and that is losing too much time. He won't be able to help her compete for next year's scholarships. Emily is crushed.
Emily arrives at the lake house for her surprise birthday party just as the guests hide. When she walks in to the dark room, she asks Paige why she lied to Dominic, then everyone jumps out and yells 'surprise!' Emily is stunned as everyone comes up to her give her a birthday hug. At the party, Emily tells Aria she had no idea Paige was planning a surprise party for her. Aria points out Jenna and bluntly explains that Jenna is losing her vision. Later, Paige joins Emily down by the lake and says she didn't tell Dominic about Emily's injury because she wanted to make sure he would take the appointment. Emily tells Paige how she had gotten her hopes up, but Dominic won't be able to help her get a scholarship. Paige recommends getting a second opinion and Emily asks why she is pushing so hard for this. She says that she knows how badly Emily wants to swim, but Emily says, "or how badly you want me to swim?" Paige starts crying because she wants Emily to go to Stanford with her. Emily cries too and says that they have to face that they're not going to be together next year. Paige tells Emily that a lot of people came to see her tonight. She asks if Emily could at least pretend to have a good time, and Emily agrees she can do that. Back at the party, Aria and Emily look around for Spencer outside. They see Jake leaving the party and Aria talks to him for a moment. Then Emily screams 'Spencer!' because she sees a body floating face down in the lake. She rushes in and turns the body over to see that it's Jenna, not Spencer. She shouts "she's not breathing!" and to call 911. As Jenna is being loaded into an ambulance, the girls wonder if someone pushed her in. Emily says she was hit on the back of the head and has blood on her sleeve to prove it. Emily tells Hanna what happened to Jenna over the phone.
Later that night, getting ready for bed, Emily and Paige talk about Jenna. Paige isn't as sure as Emily that someone purposely hurt Jenna, but Emily is positive she didn't get that gash on her head by accident. Emily thinks whoever hit her did it to make sure she didn't tell the girls what she knows about Alison. In bed, Paige asks Emily if she's still awake. Emily is, but she pretends to be asleep, so Paige turns out the light and gets into bed next to her.
The Mirror Has Three Faces[]
The Liars are late for school because they had tried to go see Jenna at the hospital earlier, but were turned away at the visitors desk. Aria yells at them to keep it down so they can sneak back into school, but Spencer sarcastically replies that none of them are going to graduate anyway. Hanna suggests Spencer talk to Shana because if CeCe drowned Jenna, then she must know the reason, but Emily doesn't think Shana is trustworthy and Hanna doesn't trust Jenna so they are back at square one. Hanna decides she's going to hunt down CeCe, even if she's been AWOL since Wilden was alive. Emily gets a text from her mom saying that Jessica DiLaurentis has offered to let them stay in her house while their home is being repaired. Emily is creeped out by the very idea, but Hanna says she has to do it since it might be their best chance of finding CeCe.
At Alison's house, Emily and Spencer walk into Ali's bedroom. Emily points out how strange it is Ali's mom turned the room into a shrine and expresses her reluctance at staying there. Spencer says it's not that unusual and that it's a great opportunity to find useful clues. It turns out Emily will be staying there alone because Pam is out of town. Ali's mom comes in and gets teary when she goes through Ali's old closet. She says she's happy seeing the girls in Alison's room, as if they'd never left.
Someone watches Emily through a window in the DiLaurentis house. Ali's mom offers to fix Emily something to eat and accidentally drops some papers. She sadly tells Emily that her husband has decided to divorce her and she is still in shock. Mrs. DiLaurentis tells Emily that after Ali disappeared, Ken boxed up her things and put the house on the market, but she was not ready to let go yet. She would see Alison everywhere. One time she saw a girl who looked just like Ali jogging in the park, and practically tackled her. She ignores Emily's question, "So it wasn't Ali?" and continues to explain why she redid Ali's bedroom. Jessica expresses that she didn't know her husband as well as she thought she did. Emily sympathizes and tells her she is going through something similar with the person she is dating. Jessica assumes Emily is seeing a boy, but Emily lets her know she is dating a girl. Jessica tells Emily she is proud of her. Emily lets Jessica know that she's not the only one who's seen Ali, and she is not surprised because Emily loved Ali as much as she did. She wishes Ali could have returned those feelings. Later, at the DiLaurentis residence, Spencer tells Emily and Hanna that Jessica must have been at Radley at some point because when Toby spoke to Dr. Palmer, he used her name specifically. Spencer claims that Toby was there following a lead from Nigel's phone. Emily points out that Dr. Palmer has dementia, but Spencer is sure. She wants to ask Jessica about it, but Emily thinks she's too fragile at the moment because of the divorce. Emily then leaves for work.
After work, Emily finds Mrs. DiLaurentis in the living room knitting. The heater repair guy informs her that he fixed the circuit breaker, but she may have bigger troubles. Mrs. DiLaurentis and Emily head into the basement. They look into the crawlspace and find evidence that someone had been using it as their temporary home. Jessica says that whoever lived there is gone now and that they probably moved out before Jason moved back in. She dismissively mentions something about the gardener cleaning it up and leaves, but Emily continues to investigate. She notices the several holes drilled in the ceiling, perhaps a method for the intruder to keep track of who is upstairs.
Bring Down the Hoe[]
The four girls sit at lunch, discussing the crawlspace under the DiLaurentis home. They are sure that CeCe has been camping out there, and Emily no longer wants to live in the house. They wonder why CeCe has it out for them and Jenna, unsure what Ali may have told her about their involvement in getting her kicked out of college. Hanna arrives and tells the girls that her mom hasn’t had any luck finding a new lawyer. She wishes Veronica could stay on the case. Lt. Tanner shows up and approaches the girls to tell them they are still investigating who drove into Emily's house. She tells them that while they were sorting through the wreckage, they found a muddy shoe that matches the print of the shoes found at Wilden’s crime scene. When she mentions being able to test it to identify the owner, Hanna gets upset and walks away. The girls catch up to her and tell her not to worry, and that "A" probably planted the shoe there because Mona made a false confession. Spencer relays a plan to find out for sure if CeCe is back in town and living in the crawlspace, in turn giving Tanner a new suspect to harrass. She tells Hanna to go shopping with Mrs. DiLaurentis while she, Emily and Aria check out the crawlspace. They leave Hanna in the hallway. Later, Emily tells Paige she has a lot going on and probably can't attend the country-themed dance tonight. She shows her the recommendation letter Zoe wrote. Paige reads the letter and thinks that Zoe likes Emily, but Emily doesn't think so. She gets defensive about it and leaves. Emily finds Ezra in his classroom and shows him Zoe’s letter. She asks him if it is too positive. He snaps at her, saying some people have real problems to worry about, but before she can leave, he apologizes and tells her that Maggie is taking Malcolm away and to not tell Aria.
In the crawlspace, Aria and Emily wait for Spencer to arrive. Emily tells Aria that she should call Ezra, but doesn’t say why. They find a black button that they think might belong to Red Coat before Spencer finally arrives. They hear someone upstairs and when Aria looks through one of the drilled holes in the ceiling, a knitting needle almost stabs her in the eye. Someone is repeated jabbing it through the holes, attempting to stab the girls, or at least make sure they don't see them, then the person upstairs leaves. Because of the incident, Emily decides that she no longer wants to live at the DiLaurentis house and wants to move into Spencer’s house. Spencer, who had been upstairs, hears the question and seems not to want Emily to move in. Aria asks who Spencer was talking to upstairs. She says "Toby. Why? What did I miss?" Aria asks, “What did we miss?” Spencer reluctantly tells them that Toby thinks that his mom was murdered, and that he has been getting messages about it from "A".
Later that day, Spencer helps Emily pack up her things in Ali’s old room. Emily gets a text from Paige about the dance that night, but she doesn’t respond. She sees a bottle of blue nail polish, and Emily has a flashback of Ali painting her toenails with that same color. In the flashback, Ali tells Emily that she needs to break up with Ben because he's a flathead and deep down, Emily knows he is not what she wants. Emily protests, but Ali insists staying with Ben sets a bad precedent for the rest of her life. She offers to break up with Ben for her, adding that she has done it for a lot of people. Ali describes one time when a friend of hers couldn’t break up with a “really scary dude,” so she did it for her. Unfortunately, the guy had a gun and pulled it on her. When Emily, astonished, asks if a boy has a gun in their school, Ali says that the guy doesn't go to their school “anymore.” After the flashback, Emily tells Spencer that she thinks Ali helped CeCe break up with Wilden, who pulled a gun on Ali when she tried to do it. Emily says that she assumed that Wilden had been seeing Ali, but now thinks that CeCe was seeing Jason and Wilden, and that when CeCe returned to Rosewood, Wilden may have tried to hook up with CeCe again, which led to CeCe killing him.
Aria, Jake, Spencer, Toby and Emily arrive at the hoedown. Emily sees Paige with a group of people, but neither of them make any move to talk to each other. We see that someone is watching Emily. Aria approaches Emily and Emily tells her to go talk to Ezra. She tells her that Maggie is taking away Malcolm, and Aria quickly goes to talk to Ezra. Emily looks up at the second floor of the barn and sees Red Coat walking away. Emily tells Spencer that she saw Red Coat. They see her run out of the barn and the girls chase after her. By the time they get outside, they see someone running away ahead of them. They beg a man to use his truck that is used for hayrides, but he says no. They get inside it anyways and while they try to start up the truck, they see something crawling towards them in the hay behind them. They get out and grab a hoe, and start poking the hay, but no one is there. They recover a red coat, however, one that is missing a button. Back at the hoedown, Spencer and Emily look over the red coat but find nothing. Spencer walks off to call Toby while Emily walks over to Paige. She tells her that she wants to dance with her, and the two dance before they shut off the music.
Now You See Me, Now You Don't[]
News of Travis’s testimony spreads through Rosewood and is seen by Aria, Emily, Spencer and Hanna in Spencer’s kitchen. It is revealed that the cops want Ashley to be in a lineup for Travis. A package addressed to the four girls is delivered to the house. Inside are Magic 8 balls for each of them, which spell out the phrase: “If she goes free, you’ll hear from me. Kisses —A”. They worry that if Hanna’s mom goes free, CeCe will come after them. Emily says to let her, but Spencer notes that she might have just declared “World War A”. After school, Paige and Emily sit outside of the school. Paige says she is thrilled for Hanna and her mom, but is worried about Emily. Emily replies that A is a terrorist and it’s working on them. She says that they now know to look out for CeCe. Paige offers for Emily to stay with her at night, and Emily happily agrees.
At Hanna's house, the girls receive another package. They open it and find a small white coffin, and inside is a doll that represents Mona. They get a text from A, which threatens that if they don’t find Mona, the cops will think that they killed her and Emily says that they have to find Mona fast. Hanna, Paige and Emily go off to look for Mona. At school, Paige and Emily enter the French club and meet Jackie, a fellow student. Jackie says that Mona called the club and said that she would be there but she didn't show up. Emily is at Paige’s house, looking tense. Paige tells her not to worry and that she is safe here, but Emily says she is worried about Mona. Paige says that she understands worrying about CeCe, but not Mona. Emily replies that they made Mona how she turned out to be, but Paige says that Alison did that. Emily says that they let her.
The next day, the four girls are gathered at Spencer’s house. None of them have found Mona and they are worried. Another package arrives; an empty black wooden box. However, Spencer opens it a certain way, thanks to her expertise with magic tricks. A saw with a message appears in the box. "Watch me make a girl disappear. Kisses, - A". Hanna studies the box while the others go online to see if there are any magic shows going on nearby. They find one that is taking place in Ravenswood that very day, and they decide that it can’t be a coincidence. They head out for Ravenswood. The girls find a sign leading them to Charlemagne’s Magic Show, an outdoor magic show hosted by a strange mime. The mime picks Aria for a disappearing act and after much hesitation, she agrees. The trick goes well, but afterwards, they notice that Emily is missing. They get a text from A that reads “leger de main”, which means “sleight of hand”. The girls realize that while they were distracted, A kidnapped Emily.
They call Emily’s cell, and she is awoken by the ringing, in a box. She tells the girls that she has no idea where she is and she begins to panic when she hears a saw coming for her. The girls turn and see Red Coat running away from them, turning a street corner. The girls chase her into an old warehouse, and see a wooden coffin chained up on a conveyor belt, headed for an electric wood cutting saw. The girls race to the coffin and try to open it, with Emily screaming inside. They try to cut the chains, but it seems too late until Red Coat presses a button and stops the machine. The girls turn and see her leave the building, but there is another Red Coat heading up the stairs. The girls realize that there are two Red Coats, and while Hanna opens the coffin and gets Emily out, Aria chases one Red Coat while Spencer pursues the other.
As the girls are comforting Aria about CeCe's fall, they realize that CeCe is gone. Spencer rushes the girls out of the warehouse quickly, saying that she needs to show them something. She says that the Red Coat she chased might have been Ali, because she waited for Spencer to catch up, as if making sure Spencer followed her. They arrive at the apartment building Red Coat brought Spencer to. They go up to the apartment and find the entire apartment filled with blown-up pictures of Alison— portraits, candid shots and more. In one painting, a small hole is cut out, and we see that someone, who is wearing mascara, is watching them. There are whiteboards showing a timeline of each girl’s lives since the A text messages began, reaching all the way back to Ali’s funeral. Emily picks up what appears to be a large scrapbook, filled with pictures of Ali posing, and she is wearing the same outfit in each one. Hanna says she remembered buying the shirt with Ali, and she had said that she'd needed it for a date that night with an older guy. Aria calls the girls over to Ali’s timeline, and says that A hasn’t only been following the girls, but also Ali, too. He has pinned Ali to the fire at the lodge and has been following her trail to Ravenswood. The girls stare at it in shock, and Emily wonders out loud, “If Ali has been alive this whole time, then whose funeral did we go to?” They realize that Board Shorts thinks Ali is going to be at the celebration. Spencer says that they need to find Ali first.
As the girls are unable to unlock the computers in the lair, they walk out of the building. Night has fallen, and the celebration will be starting soon. They are approached by Mrs. Grunwald, who tells them that it is dangerous for them to go chasing after Ali. Spencer says that she thought she never knew Ali, but Grunwald says that she lied to protect Ali. According to Grunwald, Ali called Grunwald that summer to find out who was stalking her. Mrs. Grunwald believes herself to be a psychic, which is why Ali called her. The night Ali went missing, Mrs. Grunwald had a bad feeling so she drove to Ali's house. She walked into her backyard and saw Ali's hand reaching up from the ground. She pulled Ali out, who was bleeding from the head and was very confused. She put Ali into the car and drove her to the hospital. When they got there, Mrs. Grunwald ran in to get help, but while she was gone, Alison ran away. When the girls ask for confirmation that Ali is still alive, Mrs. Grunwald says, “Haven’t you all felt it? She was never really gone.” She says she hasn’t seen Ali since that night, and says she probably won’t until she finds someone that she can trust. The girls say that Ali can trust them and she knows that, but Mrs. Grunwald says she isn’t sure about that. When asked why she didn’t go to the police, Mrs. Grunwald says, “She doesn’t want to be found!” When asked why she is telling them this now, she says that they are all being watched and they need to leave Ravenswood. She says that "he" is hoping that they will lead him to Alison. They hear laughter — the celebration is beginning. Mrs. Grunwald walks away, saying: “He’s here.” The girls decide that they need to find Alison and go into a costume shop to get dresses for the celebration.
Grave New World[]
Dressed in their costumes, Aria, Hanna, Emily and Spencer make their way into the graveyard party. Emily is hesitant to continue on—she isn’t sure she is ready to see Alison, but Aria says that they already have. With that, they all walk through the graveyard’s gates. At the party, the four girls are gathered in the tent, wondering why Ali would go to a party like this. They spot a strange person dressed in a gas mask costume, similar to the one they found in A’s lair. He is with a girl as well, and they talk to each other in low voices. As Spencer spies on him, Aria and Emily follow the girl as she walks out of the tent, but Emily is stopped by Mrs. Grunwald, who tells her that they should all leave.
As they walk through the graveyard, they spot Red Coat running into a tomb. They all quickly chase after her, but once they get there, she is gone. They spot an area that has no leaves, so they push away a statue, which reveals a hidden pathway of tunnels down under the graveyard. They walk down into them, and then the secret door shuts, trapping them in the tunnels. Panicked, they make their way through the tunnels, one of which is very windy. They all hold hands and stand against the wall, but Hanna gets separated from the group. Spencer, Aria and Emily make their way into the house from the tunnels, looking for Hanna. They hear what they think is Alison talking, and Spencer runs off to look for her, and Aria and Emily lose her. Aria and Emily find Spencer in the greenhouse and wake her up, and they quickly run out of the room, following Ali’s voice. They follow it into a room, and see that it wasn’t Ali’s voice at all, but just a recording. Mrs. Grunwald walks in and tells them that they shouldn’t be in there. The girls say that they think they followed Alison into the house, and Mrs. Grunwald reveals that the tape was a recording of one of Ali’s sessions with her. Six months before, the tapes were stolen, and Mrs. Grunwald gets a bad feeling—that Emily, Aria, or Spencer has touched the one Alison fears the most. They leave the house and return to their car, and they find that their tires have been slashed.
Hanna rejoins the girls just as Ezra arrives and offers them all a ride home. They drive back to Rosewood and get out of the car. Once Ezra has driven away, they spot Red Coat staring at them in the woods. She runs away, and they chase her back to Spencer’s barn, where she stops and pulls down her hood. She turns around, and it is Alison, alive and well. She looks nervous, and she greets them with shaky “Did you miss me?” The girls are all overcome with shock and joy. Ali looks back into the woods and sees a light, and says that she doesn’t have much time and that it isn’t safe for her to be in Rosewood. They beg her not to leave again, and Ali says that she wants to come home, but she needs their help. They hear someone approaching, and Ali fearfully puts a finger to her lips. The girls turn. Ezra walks into the backyard, supposedly to give Aria back her cell phone. When the girls turn back around, Ali has run off again.
Who's In The Box?[]
After just encountering Alison moments before, the four girls now sit in Spencer’s room, visibly shaken. They are all confused and wonder where Ali has been hiding all of this time, and even question if she is A. No matter what, they resolve to try and make Rosewood a safer place for Ali to return to. They travel to the mausoleum where Ali’s body was believed to have been buried.
A week later, Emily visits Jessica DiLaurentis, who still changes Ali’s sheets. Emily asks her about Jason, but Jessica replies that he has been on a cross country trip but she would be able to get a hold of him if it was an emergency. At school, Emily tells Aria and Spencer about Jessica and Jason, and Spencer expresses that someone needs to know where Jason is. All three girls are nervous because things have been quiet ever since they saw Ali outside Spencer’s barn. Later, Paige and Emily discuss swimming, but Paige notices that something else is on Emily’s mind, resulting in Emily lashing out at her. In an empty classroom, Hanna shows Spencer and Emily the website for a missing girl named Sara Harvey, who was last seen Labor Day weekend, the same time that Ali went missing. Sara is from Courtland, not far from Rosewood. She is blonde and is similar in appearance to Alison, so Hanna decides to arrange a meeting with some of Sara’s friends, disguising the meeting as a support session. As the girls look at the webpage, the projector flips on, showing an old film laced with a message from A: whoever finds Alison first gets to keep her. At the Brew, Hanna tells Emily and Aria that she made an appointment with Tina, a friend of Sara Harvey’s, and that she doesn’t want to meet up with her alone. Emily says that she doesn’t want to go, and is mad that Ali never reached out to any of them or told them that she was alive. Hanna says that no matter what Ali has been up to, they need to bring her back to find out what has been going on.
The next day, Emily and Hanna sit with Tina and her friend, Claire, and they discuss Sara Harvey. Sara is described as being very similar to Ali, and Sara and her friends also went to a movie theater in Rosewood. However, she was last seen before the hole had been filled with cement, meaning that Sara was not the one buried in Ali’s grave.
Later that evening, Emily cleans up the Brew when someone knocks on the door—it is Claire, one of Sara Harvey’s friends. She had remembered that Emily worked here, so she had decided to stop by. At the Brew, Claire explains that another one of Sara’s friends, Avery, has been inconsolable ever since Sara went missing. She describes how envious she is of the situation with Alison—she wishes that Sara were dead as well, because it has been very hard being one of her friends. She describes Sara as being someone perfect, but someone that would also take away two things for everything she give you. She says that she wished that Sara were dead even before she’d disappeared, and she runs out of the Brew, crying.
Later, Emily tells Paige that Ali let her kiss her, but that when she realized that it meant nothing to Ali, she was very hurt. She says that she doesn’t think that Ali ever loved anyone, but all she did was collect love. She says that Ali broke her heart. Paige asks if this is how she finally says good-bye to Ali, and Emily says it is.
Love ShAck, Baby[]
The girls look through Ali’s diary, and quickly realize that the stories she wrote are shrouded in pseudonyms and half-truths. Hanna is still hesitant about showing the girls the journal; because of this, Spencer and Emily lash out at her, but Aria interrupts, saying that the important thing is that they have the diary now. They decide to read the stories and weed out the ones about them, and whatever is left over they’ll investigate. Emily decides to take the journal first.
That night, Emily is awoken by Ali, who seemingly climbed through her bedroom window to see Emily. Alison is apologetic towards her, saying how much she missed her. Emily, however, is not enthusiastic about seeing Ali again. Ali acknowledges that she hurt Emily the most, but says that she is a different person now. She also says that she doesn’t know who is after her, but she needs Emily because Emily always saw the best in her, the person that she wants to be. Emily says that she doesn’t see Ali that way anymore. Ali notices Emily’s bracelet that she gave to her—and Emily wakes up in the morning. The window is wide open and she isn’t wearing the bracelet.
At school, Ezra spies on Emily looking through Ali’s journal. Meanwhile, Aria leaves a pen on Ezra’s desk, and Spencer openly asks her is she is still in love with him. They join Emily, who has come up with a color coding system to label the stories in Ali’s journal. They find a poem, "The Busy Bee" in the journal. Aria recognizes what Ali is writing about—the Busy Bee Inn in Killingworth, and they wonder if that is where Ali is hiding. They all agree to take a ride out there.
At the Brew, Emily finds a note in her bag that says: “I want to come home. Meet me at our spot.” She quickly leaves. Emily visits the Kissing Rock to wait for Ali to show up. Emily waits long enough before finally taking off her bracelet and leaving.
That night, the four girls leave Rosewood for Killingworth. Emily’s car stalls and Aria notices that Emily's car’s GPS is different than Aria’s phone. The girls get outside and check Emily’s engine, but they are unsure what to do. Hanna texts Travis, who says that he won’t be able to meet them for another two hours. Aria realizes that Ezra’s cabin is not far from where they are stranded; she suggests she waits there, but tells the others that the cabin belongs to her uncle. At the cabin, Hanna goes outside to get a signal to call Travis, and Emily goes with her. Inside, while Spencer and Aria go into the laundry room to get blankets, the door shuts behind them. Aria looks through the keyhole and sees a hooded figure walking around. They open a window and scream outside for help, and Hanna and Emily both hear them. They break a window to get into the cabin since the front door was locked. They open the door and let Spencer and Aria out, but discover that Ali’s journal is gone, but the bracelet that Emily left at the Kissing Rock was left in its place. Travis then arrives to bring them all home.
At Aria's, Emily shows Aria the note that Ali seemingly left for her, and tells her about the “dream” she had about Ali visiting her. A then sends the girls a text of the Busy Bee Inn, thanking them for the tip. The realize that they basically gave Ali to A due to all of the post-its and notes from the journal. In the final scene, 'A' is seen hacking into the GPS system, hinting that it was 'A' who messed up Emily's GPS settings.
Close Encounters[]
Emily, Aria, Spencer and Hanna immediately follow up on their lead by taking a trip to the Busy Bee Inn. Upon their arrival, they are met with a mess. Alison's clothes were laying all over the place, and a window had been smashed. The Liars begin to theorize what may have made Alison leave the Busy Bee Inn. Did A finally get to Alison? Before they could come up with more theories, the door slowly closed, revealing a message from A: YOU'RE TOO LATE! -A
The next day, Emily enters the church with a pie in one hand, and her phone in the other. She and Hanna are discussing the events of the night before on the phone. Hanna informs Emily about her theory: Could the struggle at the Busy Bee Inn be a complete set up? After Emily sets down her pie for the Church bake sale, someone slowly enters the church and creeps out of Emily's view. Emily finishes up lighting candles when she hears someone moving behind her. She rushes over to a door finding it locked, turns around and sees Shana standing behind her. Shana tells Emily she has a message for her from Alison, but Emily assumes it's just a way for Shana to rub in her face, the fact that Alison is dead. Shana tells Emily they both know Alison never was truly dead and Alison wants the Liars to stop looking for her since A almost got to her at the Busy Bee Inn. Shana reveals that she's known Alison her entire life having been living next to Alison's grandparents house in Georgia. After Emily questioned Shana's friendship with Jenna, Shana tells Emily that Jenna was on Alison's suspect list to who might have been trying to kill her. Looking at Shana, Emily challenges her to prove that she really knows Alison. The girls are at Aria's talking about what Emily and Shana had been talking about earlier that day. Emily tells her friends that Shana confirmed Alison really did save Emily from the locked up barn in "Over My Dead Body!. Spencer asks Emily what she and Alison talked about outside the barn, but Emily refuses to tell them saying "I want to keep that between us".. They begin to theorize about Shana and Alison's relationship, still believing that Shana could just be one of A's minions.
Later, in the park, Shana tells Emily that Alison missed her the most because Emily was Alison's favorite. Emily, believing in Shana's words, demands to know where Alison is right now. Shana tells her she never knows where Alison ever is, because Alison is always the one who comes to Shana, not the other way around. Shana also informs Emily she's known Alison was always alive since the final events of Unmasked. Emily asks why Shana never told anyone that Alison was alive, but Shana ignores her telling her that in order for her to see Alison, she needed to go alone. Emily tells Spencer that Shana completely checks out. She knew word for word what Alison told Emily at the barn, and she really did grow up next to Ali's grandparents. Spencer is still suspicious of Shana, though. She tells Emily that maybe Alison wanting to meet her was all just a ruse cooked up by A. Emily doesn't think so, believing it really is Alison trying to reach out to her. Spencer tells Emily she does not want Emily going there alone, but Emily gives Spencer a frustrated look, telling her "It's the only way Alison will meet with me!"
Shana and Emily drive up to a warehouse. Emily asks Shana if she's going to come in to see Alison with her, but Shana shakes her head. Emily gets out of the car and heads up the steps and Shana drives away. Once she enters, Emily takes a look around the place. She hears something behind her and goes to look just as Alison creeps out of her hiding place. Emily turns around and gasps when she sees Alison. The two hug and Emily wants to help Alison. She assures Alison that she can trust herself and the other Liars. Alison tells Emily that she realizes that Emily never stopped carring for her, and she is sorry for everything she put Emily through. She wants Emily to help her find A so she can go home. Another noise is heard behind them and Alison gets scared, asking if Emily told anyone else about their meeting. She runs away as Emily tries to find out who followed her. Spencer appears from behind a shelf just as Alison enters an elevator. Emily tries to stop her, but she's too late. She looks back at Spencer with a glare on her face. Emily and Spencer get into an argument, and Spencer tries to apologize to Emily for scaring Alison away. Emily tells Spencer it's going to take more than an "I'm sorry" for Emily to forgive Spencer. Emily realizes that she betrayed Ali, and is afraid that she will no longer trust her. Spencer immediately theorizes that Alison is still up to her old tricks, but Emily refuses to believe it, saying Alison was actually sincere tonight. She leaves the warehouse, leaving Spencer infuriated.
Bite Your Tongue[]
Aria and Emily returns from a movie. Aria comments on how she missed half the movie because the dude in front of them was making sales call and that if Spencer was there she would have pegged the dude with her jelly beans. Emily gets a little annoyed to hear Spencer’s name. Aria tells Emily that Spencer is sorry but Emily should not keep holding on to the grudge she felt. According to Aria, Spencer was “just trying to protect” Emily. But Emily thinks that Spencer was trying to control the situation like she always does and she made a mistake by trusting Spencer. They are at Aria’s front door when they hear loud music coming from inside the house. They go in and find that a party is going on inside. Aria orders Mike to get all the people out in ten minutes. She and Emily go upstairs. Aria and Emily finds Mona coming out of Aria’s bedroom. When Mona is asked what she is up to, she says that she was invited by Mike who does not tuck and toll every time Mona walks into a room. Before leaving, Mona comments on Aria’s wallpaper and zips her bag.
The next day, Emily’s dad comes home from a car mechanic and tells her that her car stopping in the middle of the road was just a computer glitch and now it is fine. But Emily is still afraid of driving the car and decides to take her bike. Emily’s father is concerned about her behavior, but Emily tells him she is worried about school stuff and that she will get through it. Her dad offers her a drive to school but she declines. At school, Emily tells Hanna that 'A' tampered with her car in the woods last week. Hanna thinks that they cannot be sure without more proof. Emily confides in Hanna that she does not feel safe even in her own house anymore. Hanna asks Emily to bury the hatchet with Spencer as none of them will win in this fight of theirs. Spencer walks into the conversation and tries to talk to Emily, but Emily ignores her.
Later that night, Emily wakes up to weird noises. She closes the window. But when she hears the stairs creaking, she gets scared and gets ready to attack whoever the intruder is with scissors. The door to her room opens and the person that enters is her father. He holds a scared Emily. We see a handprint on Emily’s window pane.
The next day, Aria and Emily are talking about Aria's incident with Maggie on the way to school. Aria thinks that Maggie will never let Ezra see Malcolm anymore. Emily assures her by saying that she was just acting as Ezra’s friend and so he is not going to be mad at her. Aria asks Emily to cover for her in Ezra’s class and that’s when they catch Mike and Mona kissing! An infuriated Aria walks away.
On Wayne's request to keep Emily more involved in school, Ezra has given Emily some extra work to do. While working late at school Emily hears noises. She calls out but nobody answers. Suddenly, loud music metal music starts coming through the PA. The lights start flashing and Emily gets terrified and calls her father to come get her. She sees shadows of someone moving in the hallway and a sign flashes "Act normal, bitch". Emily runs into a classroom and locks herself in. Through a window, Emily sees her father pull up but can't get the window to open. Wayne finds the door to the school closed. A shadowy figure tries to get into the classroom. Emily breaks the window and yells for her father to help her. Wayne climbs up the side of the building, opens the window and gets her out. The hooded figure gets into the classroom just after Emily and her father reach the ground. Suddenly Wayne collapses. An ambulance arrives to take Wayne to the hospital. He tells Emily he's had some tests done and there are issues with his heart.
Emily is at Aria's who picked her up from the hospital. Aria assures her that her dad is in great hands. But Emily is worried that 'A' might harm him. Spencer arrives at Aria's house after receiving a text from Aria. Spencer asks Emily to not send her away. They share a hug. Hanna walks in looking terrified. She explains to the others about what happened at the dentist and she thinks that she was treated by 'A', Her lips were still half-frozen according to her. The three of them looks inside Hanna's mouth and Spencer pulls out a very small piece of paper from inside her mouth. It reads: "I told you. Dead girls can't smile. Stop looking. -A"
Hot for Teacher[]
Emily and the other girls walk into the Brew. They discuss whether they should trust Shana now that they know she is working with Alison. Emily thinks so, but Hanna and Aria disagree. Emily informs them her dad’s chest pains were caused from anemia, not a heart attack, and disagrees when Hanna says Shana was probably the one who tried to attack Emily at the school. Spencer suggests it could’ve been someone from the crew working on Ezra’s play. After A’s message at the dentist, Hanna thinks that for safety’s sake they should wait for Ali to find them instead of looking for her, and the others promise not to.
The next day, Emily sees Shana and asks her if Alison is all right. Shana acts cold towards her and doesn’t give any information, but she halfway agrees to tell Alison that Emily is sorry for what happened at the warehouse. Later that day, Hanna and Emily are sitting outside Spencer's house in Hanna's car and call Spencer. They ask Spencer to let them in. Spencer tells Hanna she’s at the library, and when Hanna calls her out on it because her car is in the driveway, she tells her she walked there. Hanna asks her to come over later to help with her closet, but Spencer lies again, saying she has to redo an essay for Ezra. Hanna and Emily stay parked outside of Spencer’s house trying to figure out why she’s lying. They see Shana leaving the DiLaurentis house, and Emily wants to follow her. But Hanna is still paranoid about researching anything involving Alison after her incident at the dentist's and so she drives away.
That night, Shana shows up at Emily’s house asking for her help. Someone is seen taking pictures of them on the doorstep from a parked car. Up in Emily’s room, Shana tells her she didn’t know Paige was into Emily when she dated her at swim camp, and she acted like she wanted to come between them to get information, like that Emily is protective and loyal. Shana says she answered Wren’s ad asking for help packing up quickly, and he asked her to be discrete when he found out she went to Rosewood High School. She says she remembers Ali taking the snow globe from her grandmother’s to give to someone special. Shana explains that she was trying to get something from the DiLaurentis house for Alison but didn’t get the chance, and she asks Emily to help.
The next day, Emily is in Ali’s bedroom pretending to search for a pair of her mother’s earrings she left when she stayed there. When Jessica DiLaurentis goes to check the bathroom, Emily takes down the French twin poster and finds an envelope inside the paper backing. She opens it and finds $5000 cash and a note. Emily goes to work and calls Shana to tell her she got the envelope, and Shana tells her to keep it safe until she can stop by the coffee shop after her swim meet. Emily puts it in a bag of coffee beans.
Later that night, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily discuss the new findings. Spencer informs Emily about the camera she found hidden in the vent opposite to Ezra's apartment. She deduces that he is 'A' since 'A' also likes to watch people through hidden cameras. Emily is shocked and unable to believe that Ezra could be 'A' since he helped her with her college essays. Spencer thinks that he was so sweet to the liars to get close to them. Emily is worried about Aria and wants to call her tell her about this but Spencer stops her. They decide not to tell Aria until they're positive Ezra is A, assuming she's safe in Syracuse with her dad. Emily then tells them about helping Shana and says Shana never showed up to meet her at the Brew. Emily then shows them the money she has. The girls realize that Alison must be running out of money. The girls think that since Ezra has also not been seen since that evening, he must have got Shana. Spencer thinks Ezra wants Shana to lead him to Alison.
