1999[]
October 31, 1999, Marjorie and the other girls run amok and destroy pumpkins for Halloween. In front of a house, Angela is handed a bag of dog feces and instructed to throw it at the front door, part of so-called “initiation”. She’s concerned about being seen, but Davie Adams assures her they got her back as she is handed a pumpkin to put over her head as a disguise. The girls laugh at her weak refusal. Nonetheless, Angela forces herself to do as she’s told, but the girls drive off and mockingly wave goodbye. Angela is left at the curb side breathing hard as the owner of the vandalized house yells out to the assailant. [1]
Marjorie smokes a cigarette that she hands to Angela Waters. The girl is reluctant as her mom will kill her if she finds out. Marjorie tells her to have gum later, so Angela takes a draw, coughing wildly. Marjorie assures her that she'll get used to it. A janitor finds them smoking and confronts the girls, so Marjorie shoves the box into Angela's hands, pinning the blame on her. He dismisses Marjorie but takes Angela by the hand, leading her inside.[2]
After Angela tells Davie about her sexual assault, Davie tells the girls that Angela is lying about what happened. The girls wonder if she isn't lying, with Davie calling them dense as it's clear Angela's just trying to get attention, like always. Corey and Sidney thinks it's different this time, angering Davie who doubles-down that Angela's out of control. They need to teach her a lesson. They have to ignore her, pretend that she doesn't exist. They're going to erase Angela Waters. But not just them, everyone else too. They'll turn Angela into a ghost, making her invisible as if she were nothing. The student body slams into Angela and knocks her to the ground, making her drop her papers. The students step on them and ignore her as Davie and her friends laugh from the lockers. Things just kept getting worse, and there was one last final humiliation.
December 31, 1999, Angela calls out in despair for Sidney Haworthe or Davie Adams outside a warehouse currently blasting with music. Tear-stricken, Angela Waters stumbles inside, begging for help to no one’s bother. She finds Sidney and drops to her knees in the middle of the crowd. Through her sobs, she begs Sidney to look at her. Davie, however, angrily mutters to Sidney that they’ve talked about this already, forcing a conflicted Sidney to join her other friends. Devastated, Angela looks around in pain and notices a ladder nearby. She decided to climb. The rave continues in full swing, and as the countdown begins partygoers suddenly take notice of a silhouette up above. The DJ cuts the music, allowing Angela to scream out to the girls below if they finally see her. Davie yells at her to stop, but Angela raised her arms and steps forward.
The crowds disperse with screams of terror, though only five girls stay still. They force themselves to look upon the bloody, gruesome scene before them; Angela’s broken, dead body.[3]
After Angela's death, her mother Rose went berserk and wanted to avenge her daughter's death by attacking the students of Millwood High School. Her targets were the boys of the the school as she knew about Angela's assault, though The Sinners were nearby. Rose was stopped by a teacher before she could succeed.[4]
2022[]
Marjorie admonishes Noa for risking her probation. Later, the mothers gather at the Adams house, where Corey sarcastically starts the table talk with no one will win the mother of the year award. Marjorie jokes the situation is dire if the great Corey Bryant comes back to town. Elodie remarks that being in Davie’s house feels wrong, and it is too big of a coincidence their daughters are all involved. Corey is unsurprised as the town and school are small, but agrees they need to support their children through the disciplinary meeting. Sidney adds that the boy, Tyler, should be held accountable and she has his phone. She and Corey discuss logistics on how to approach the principal and sheriff.[5]
Marjorie walks through the lobby of Millwood General. She finds a gift bag on her desk with an old, battered bear inside. The bear's shirt reads “Mother of the YeAr" in blue and red glitter. Attached to its arm is a bottle of pills. She flashes back to sitting on a bench outside Millwood High, asking Angela to forgive her for the cigarette ordeal. She even gives Angela a gift to thank her for taking the blame. Inside the bag, is the same teddy bear but with a “Best Friend 4 Ever” t-shirt. In the present, Marjorie shoves the bear back into the bag as Angela's question of them being friend's rings in her ears. Marjorie enters just then, having gotten off work early. She invites Shawn to join them for a movie, but he refuses.[6]
Noa rushes home to tell Marjorie that Nurse Simmons called Millwood General and they will hire her back if she goes to rehab for 30 days. Marjorie thinks she's doing good, which Noa points out isn't true. Her whole life she's never known her not to be on some kind of drug. She thought when she took the fall that she was helping her, that would be Marjorie's rock bottom. But it wasn't Marjorie's, it was hers. Marjorie concedes that she's right about everything and this isn't how things are supposed to be. She's supposed to be holding the family together. Noa offers to do it together as partners. Marjorie agrees to go to rehab. Noa smiles and lays her head in her mom's lap.[7]
Noa comes home and tells Marjorie that Tabby and Imogen were raped, but don't know who the guy was. They have an idea for the blood drive to match a DNA sample from Imogen's baby. Marjorie tells her that illegally obtained DNA samples wouldn't hold up in court, but she knows already. It would at least be enough to open an investigation. She has to get the DNA samples to Marjorie directly, as she has a friend at the lab. If they can figure it out with minimal risk, then yes. Imogen has to get a paternity test first. Noa thanks her and they hug.
After the drive, the girls hand the bags over to Marjorie with their separation instructions for the jocks and non-jocks. They have the names of every boy who donated, too. Marjorie will drop it off with her friend at the lab and they'll wait a week or two.[8]
Marjorie adds that it was a game - a terrible game. Imogen asks about her mom and what she did to Angela. One Halloween, Davie thought it would be funny to make Angela throw filth at someone's door. After she did it, they all drove away and just left her there, alone. Now, they keep talking to one another so nothing like this ever happens again. Nothing leaves this room and after tonight, they move on.
Marjorie and Noa keep talking at the Olivar Apartment. In light of everything, Marjorie wants to try to get clean, but not with rehab. She wants to do it by herself at home. She's a nurse and knows how to detox. Noa think it sounds messy, and it is, so Marjorie needs her to stay at Shawn's for a few days. Noa doesn't want her to be alone, but Marjorie assures her that she won't be. She reached out to her sponsor, Grace, who is on her way over. She does need help with her shifts at Pinball Pizza. Noa agrees to cover for her and will go tomorrow after school.
Noa comes home to find her mom's drug deal there. She demands to know why he's there. She grabs a bat and threatens him to get out of her fucking house. Marjorie stops her as she called him, as she needed his help. Noa realizes what's happening, adding that her mom doesn't need that kind of help.[9]
Noa asks Marjorie if she knew that Beasley was the one who raped Angela. Marjorie remarks that it was just a rumor that was never confirmed. Marjorie is leaving her apartment when A appears. She screams, trying to run away, but A is close on her heels.
Marjorie wants to share something with all of them. She's going to check into rehab but just wanted to spend the holidays with Noa before going in. Corey assures Marjorie that they'll take care of her.[10]
