Season 6 of Pretty Little Liars was renewed by ABC Family on June 10, 2014, as part of a two season renewal. Consisting of 20 episodes, production began in mid-March 2015 and ended in early October 2015. Furthermore, this season featured a behind-the-scenes special, "5 Years Forward", moving the show five years forward after A's reveal.
Summary
- 6A
Season 6 begins moments after the Season 5 finale, with Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Mona trapped outside the "dollhouse" - where their tormentor, Charles, has been trapping them - with nowhere to run. As the girls struggle to survive, Ezra, Caleb, and Toby continue the fight to find them. Charles' story begins to come together and the Liars eventually solve the puzzle, finally putting an end to the "A" game.
- 6B
Picking up five years after we last saw the Liars, the girls are not the same people they were when they left Rosewood. Having pursued their own paths and adjusting to a life without “A,” how will they be able to cope when something happens in Rosewood that forces them to go back to where it all started? Torn between their old habits and their new lives, the Liars must stick around, and together, as relationships are once again put to the test and new secrets are revealed.
Storylines
Spencer Hastings
Things get complicated for Spencer after the escape from the Dollhouse, as her old addiction starts to emerge in order to relieve stress. The torture she had faced in there is causing now a sleep disorder, which heavily intensifies the habit and makes Spencer ask for help from Dean, her old addiction counselor, and Sabrina, the baker from The Brew. While she is occupied with finding out Charles’ identity and who’s behind the Carissimi Group, her relationship with Toby keeps a steady state. After the big reveal, Spencer goes to Georgetown in order to become involved in the political domain in Washington, as we see five years later, when all of them are asked to come back to Rosewood by Alison. It is revealed that her relationship with Toby fell apart because of the distance and the different future plans, while her memories drive her into a relationship with Caleb. She is now dealing with the drama of her mother’s election campaign, as the daughter of the other candidate is no other than Toby’s current girlfriend, Yvonne, which reconnects Spencer with her ex-boyfriend. The situation gets even worse, after the appearance of the leak for which Caleb takes the blame, making their relationship be forbidden.
Emily Fields
The aftershocks of the Dollhouse lead Emily to a friendship with the former missing girl, Sara Harvey, who was Charles’ prisoner. She is trying to help her adapt again into society, with the cost of denying her own problems. After the offer of Nicole, the supervisor of Habitat for Humanity, she is forced to make a decision about her near future. Emily chooses the relationship with Sara, only to be ultimately betrayed, as she is revealed to be Red Coat, Black Widow and Charlotte’s main helper. As a graduate, the Liar goes to Pepperdine University, but drops out later because of her father’s sudden death. Working now as a bartender, she comes back to Rosewood at Ali’s request. Resolving her former internal issues regarding Wayne, she engages in a fight with her mother. Emily decides to donate her eggs in order to gain money for college, but the new stalker steals them and threatens to use them. Believing Sara is the new tormentor, she starts investigating. In the season finale, Emily takes care of Alison because of her fragile state.
Hanna Marin
Confronted with PTSD, Hanna relieves herself through anger. Destroying her room and temporarily breaking-up with Caleb, she doesn’t want to be overly-protected anymore and decides to find out once and for all who Charles is. She investigates along with Spencer, Rhys becoming immediately her main suspect. After the Big A reveal, she graduates and moves to New York with Caleb, who pays her fee for NY Fashion Institute of Technology. Hanna embarks into a life that focuses on fashion shows, in which Caleb doesn’t seem to fit. These fights drive the apart and they reconnect five years later, when they come back to Rosewood. Being engaged with Jordan now and with Caleb starting a relationship with Spencer, Hanna is left uncertain and confused since she still has feelings for her former boyfriend. The situation complicates after she erased a footage from The Radley Hotel in order to help Aria avoid trouble with the police. With her wedding plans moving forward, she questions again if her fiancé is the right decision. As the new stalker is starting to get more dangerous, she and Caleb come up with a trap in which Hanna represents the bait. Knowing the risks, she admits her true feelings for Caleb and they kiss. The plan goes awry and Hanna is abducted by the mysterious A.D. The season ends up with Hanna being unconsciously dragged in the church, her state being left unknown.
Aria Montgomery
Now in liberty, Aria copes with knowing that her boyfriend, Andrew, could be the infamous Charles. She rejects Ezra’s advice on writing about what she had experienced in the Dollhouse. The Liar develops a passion for photography and dolls, then makes a new friend, Clark, who helps Aria to improve her skills. Their work is not in vain, as she decides to enter a photography contest. Even if Charles sabotages her, Aria manages to win it. At the prom, she finds out that Clark is, in fact, an undercover cop, who is trying to protect them and to find out Charles’ identity. Telling her goodbyes to Ezra, Aria is ready to enroll at Savannah State University, which later, she drops in favor of Boston University to become a publisher. She embarks into a relationship with a colleague, Liam, and they’re still together when Aria comes back to Rosewood. Reconnecting with Ezra, who is depressed because of Nicole’s disappearance, she comforts him. Aria, then, finds herself suspected by the other girls to be Charlotte’s killer. Proved to be innocent, she continues helping Ezra by writing his book. Her boss encourages them to be co-authors, which leads to an affair between the former lovers.
Alison DiLaurentis
Determined to save her friends, Alison comes with a rescue plan in which she has to put her life in danger. After the big escape, she is shocked to find that Charles is her brother, but is ready to meet him and solve the puzzle. Seeking help from her father and her brother, the story seems to resurface. At the prom, ‘A’ accepts to finally meet her sister. The suspenseful moment reveals that Charles is no other than Alison’s fugitive best friend and bur now her lost transgender sister, Charlotte DiLaurentis AKA CeCe Drake. Charlotte abducts her family and takes her to Radley in order to tell them her story. Later, Alison saves Charlotte from a suicide attempt as the former stalker declares “game over”. The next five years, Alison stays in Rosewood to take care of her sister, who is a patient in a mental hospital. She becomes a teacher at Rosewood High and asks the Liars to come back for Charlotte’s testimony. Upon her Charlotte's release though, someone kills her, an event that leads Alison to be utterly devastated. The relationship (and subsequent, marriage) with Elliot Rollins, Charlotte’s former psychiatrist, gets her back on track, only to be betrayed by him in the season finale. Elliot, along with Jessica’s former unknown twin sister, Mary Drake, scare Alison and make her admit herself to a mental hospital, in order to obtain the Carissimi Group’s money.
Mona Vanderwaal
Heavily tortured by Charles in the Dollhouse, Mona manages to escape it along with the other Liars. Questioned by the police about her fake death, she succeeds in proving her innocence, even though that causes Lesli a lot of troubles shortly afterward. Mona reconciles with Mike after an emotional fight, and then helps Alison in staying safe. During prom night, she and the other girls watch a live feed with Charlotte and Alison, in which the former tormentor tells her story. While crying, Mona admits hitting Bethany as she thought it was Alison. Five years later, Mona works in politics, helping Veronica’s campaign by feigning being on Phillips’ side. At Hanna’s bridal shower, the girls make her feel unwanted and blame her for Aria’s incident, only to later lose her job because of Yvonne’s leak. Emily confronts Mona and finds out she planned on killing Charlotte that night, but the situation went awry and she didn’t succeed. In the season finale, Mona tries to help Spencer and prove once again that she is truly on their side.
