Season 7 of Pretty Little Liars is part of a two-season renewal by Freeform which premiered on June 21st, 2016, and ended on June 27, 2017.[1]

The number of episodes this season was confirmed to be 20, and Lucy Hale also revealed that this was to be the final season of the series.[2]

Synopsis[]

In the seventh and final season, the troubled PLLs band together to unearth answers to the ultimate question. Hanna is scarred from her kidnapping, Aria is haunted by Ezra's past, Spencer make an impulsive decision, Ali's life hangs in the balance, and Emily turns to an ex for comfort. Romantic upsets entangle "Ezria", "Spaleb" and "Haleb", while the list of "Uber A" suspects is growing. And who, pray tell, is "A.D."? After making the deadliest mistake of their lives, the PLLs are desperate to end the game before it ends them. Past lies and dirty secrets come to light in the final episode of the crush-worthy suspense series that transformed entertainment, fashion, and fandom.

Storylines[]

Spencer Hastings[]

After Caleb reveals he cheated on Spencer with Hanna, she breaks up with him. After Hanna accidentally kills Elliott Rollins, The Liars bury him in the woods and create up with a time-lined alibi for the cops. She begins a sexual relationship with Detective Furey, but realizes that he's working on the Rollin's murder case. New information comes to light about Rollin's actual identity—his name is actually Archer Dunhill. The girls start to investigate his connection to Mary Drake and Jenna Marshall. Spencer and Emily discover a hard drive tying Noel Kahn to the Dollhouse, the contents give Spencer peace from flashbacks. Jenna and Noel lure the girls to an abandoned blind school to get the hard drive back. Instead of letting them leave, they ambush them and Spencer gets shot. Mary reveals she is Spencer's birth mother. After being released from the hospital, Veronica confirms Mary's statement.

The Liars play a board-game created and delivered by A.D., it hurts and helps their lives as they are threatened with exposing the truth about Dunhill's murder. Spencer is sucked in first-and is rewarded with a letter from Mary and a puzzle piece. She goes on a hunt to find Mary, who has gone into hiding after the blind school incident. Detective Furey takes himself off the case, leaving Detective Tanner to arrive back, who is determined to prove them guilty. Mona's mental state is dampened and she confesses to killing Charlotte DiLaurentis, and the game ends. Mary finds Spencer and gives her the Lost Woods Resort, and gets the girls off the hook for Dunhill's murder—by confessing to it herself. Spencer finds out she has a twin sister, who kidnaps her and reveals she is their tormentor, but The Liars, Caleb and Toby come to her rescue. The girls say goodbye to each other after Aria's wedding and leave Rosewood once again.

Emily Fields[]

Alison escapes from her husband's abuse and Hanna accidentally kills him. The Liars create a time lined alibi in case anything happens. Emily begins a romantic relationship with Sabrina that begins almost as fast as it ends. Emily helps her mom let lose after her father's death. Emily is offered a swimming coach job at her former high school, she accepts. Paige comes back to Rosewood after also being offered to work along side her, she also accepts. The Liars find out that Mary Drake has a second child and begin to search for who it could be. Emily and Spencer believe that Noel Kahn is Mary's and find evidence tying him to the Dollhouse. Jenna Marshall and Noel lure the girls to an abandoned blind school in an attempt to get the evidence back, but also ambush them.

They receive a board-game a replica of Rosewood from A.D., threatened with exposing the truth about Dunhill's murder if they don't play. In playing the game, Alison finds out that while in Welby, she had a procedure done to impregnate her, using Emily's eggs. Paige and Emily's relationship becomes rocky, but Paige ultimately encourages Alison to be with Emily. Alison and Emily begin an official romantic relationship and she decides to keep the baby. In a bad mental state, Mona confesses to killing Charlotte and the game ends. Mary gets the girls off the hook for Dunhill's murder by confessing to it herself. Alison and Emily raise their twins, Lily and Grace, as a family. Alison proposes to Emily, who accepts, and they become engaged. After A.D. kidnaps Spencer, the girls, Caleb and Toby figure out A.D. is Spencer's twin sister and come to her rescue.

Hanna Marin[]

Hanna is kidnapped and tortured by A.D. due to her fake confession that she killed Charlotte DiLaurentis. She is rescued by Mary Drake — Jessica DiLaurentis' twin sister. She breaks off her engagement with Jordan Hobart. She accidentally kills Elliott Rollins, who they later find out was faking his identity. The Liars are on time frame to find Charlotte's real killer. Hanna tries to repair her relationship with Spencer, they are rocky due to Caleb cheating on Spencer with Hanna. The Liars discover that Mary has a second child, who would now be their age, Charlotte's sibling, and a suspect for who A.D. is. Hanna believes Noel Kahn to be that person and goes off the grid to kidnap him to get him to admit this; without her friends knowledge. Hanna obtains Noel's DNA and pays to find out that he's not the child. Hanna's friends report her to be missing but she comes back to close the investigation.

Caleb and Hanna get back together. Noel takes evidence that Hanna kidnapped him as leverage as The Liars have evidence that he was Charlotte's accomplice in torturing them in the Dollhouse. The Liars meet with Noel and Jenna to get the evidence back, in a fight, Hanna accidentally kills Noel. The Liars now believe that A.D. is dead. But the game starts up again, a new board game, Liar's Lament, forces The Liars to play it, and it ruins Hanna's fashion career. They have two missions: find out who killed Charlotte and hide covering up Archer Dunhill's (Elliott Rollins) murder before the cops figure it out. She eventually asks Mona Vanderwaal to play the game and help them, which she does, but it sets her back mentally. Mona ends the board game by admitting - in an altered mental state - that she accidentally killed Charlotte. A year later, Hanna reveals to the girls that she is in her first trimester of pregnancy.

Aria Montgomery[]

Aria helps cover up the murder of Archer Dunhill for Hanna - who accidentally killed him. Ezra proposes to Aria, but Nicole (his ex-girlfriend) is found alive after being presumed dead and makes her question her relationship at time. A.D. gives The Liars a board game called Liar's Lament. Aria is put through too much and asks A.D. to take her out of the game, but there is no "out", she can only join the A.D. team. Aria considers it and begins doing tasks for A.D. Aria later tries to back out but she's already on A.D.'s line. She tries to ignore A.D.'s calls but they find a letter Aria wrote in high school about being groomed by Ezra in high school to threaten her relationship. To keep Ezra out of jail, she continues helping them torture her friends behind their back, including trashing Emily and Alison's nursery room and having a hand in blowing up Spencer's family with a secret her father had been hiding.

Mona begins to find out that she is working for A.D. and exposes this to the girls, they don't believe her until Aria goes to meet who she believes is A.D., but is really her friends. Alison, Emily, and Spencer are mad at her for her hand in hurting them and the girls cut her out for a while. They let her back in and apologize as they've all done bad things too and cutting her out would be like they're in high school. A.D. begins to close in on the girls by helping the cops find out about their crime. Detective Tanner comes back and takes over the case, she begins to gather evidence tying them to their crime, but Mary Drake steps in for Spencer and takes the blame for Archer Dunhill's murder. Clearing the girls of their crime. The game ends when Mona admits she killed Charlotte. Aria and Ezra finally get married and she reveals that she and Ezra are meeting with an adoption agency, as she is not able to carry a baby to full term.
