The Assaulter was an alias used to identify the previously unknown person responsible for sexually assaulting Tabby Haworthe and Imogen Adams. Imogen's sexual assault resulted in pregnancy. Through the investigative and deduction work of The Little Liars, he was revealed as Chip Langsberry.

Background[]

Tabby Haworthe[]

SS-206 SC (72)

Tabby's assault happened one night over the summer, when she was working late at The Orpheum with Chip. This group of kids from school came in, led by Greg and Karen. He invites her to a bonfire party in the woods, behind the school. She wants to go so she asks an astonished Chip to cover for her. He's initially upset that she wants to party with a bunch of meat heads and their girlfriends. He ultimately caves and agrees to cover her shift. Tabby goes to the party and has a lot of fun at first. But things took a turn. She didn't think she had much to drink, but got dizzy, light-headed, and knew she had to get home. The next thing she remembers is being deeper in the woods, away from everyone else, and eventually, on the ground. He was on top of her, though she passes out before knowing anything else. Chip had followed her from The Orpheum and presumably drugged her drink, following her home until she was alone in the woods. When she was unconscious, he took advantage of the circumstances he created.[1]

Imogen Adams[]

SS-206 SC (73)

Imogen's story is similar to Tabby's. It happened that same night as Karen's party in March. After she took Tyler's phone and handed Karen over to Kelly, she grabbed a bottle of vodka and went to the beach to drink it alone. That's all she remembers until she wakes up in pain with her underwear gone. She's sitting alone on the beach, crying, blood on her dress with a bottle of liquor by her side. That was also the night she got pregnant.

Series[]

Chapter Eight: Bad Blood

Imogen and Tabby have an idea to catch their attacker by using the DNA from Imogen's unborn baby to match the assaulter. They plan to use Millwood High's blood drive to get the samples, but need to ensure that every boy at the school attends. Noa's mom can hopefully help them figure out the DNA part. They can get real proof with it and make sure the police can't ignore them. Noa offers to talk with Shawn about it, too. Kelly job in the nurse's office so she can help them get involved.

OS-108 SC (105)

Chip donates blood

Noa tells Shawn about the sexual assaults so he can rally the jocks, and he is in disbelief that one of his teammates might be capable of that. He has to tell her when the jocks refuse to donate blood because they are on steroids. Their refusal forces the PLLs to pivot their plan by taking separate DNA samples from the boys locker room. This ultimately helps their cause because they can separate the jocks samples from the regular students. Noa's mom agrees to test the samples at the hospital, as she still has friends in the lab that can help them.

Chapter Nine: Dead and Buried

The lab turns up a positive sample from the cotton balls used in the blood drive, not the swabs from the jocks. They now have 66 suspects that Tabby's mom will present to the district attorney for next steps. Faran offers to retest the remaining boys with stronger labeling, but eliminates Henry from the list of suspects. Noa eliminates Shawn while Mouse takes Ash off the list, and Imogen removes Chip because he's her boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Tabby begins to suspect Chip of being her and Imogen's rapist after learning that Chip left work early the night she attended the bonfire. He was also upset with her the night of Karen's party because she turned down his advances. She questions Greg about if Chip was there or not, but he doesn't remember.

Chapter Ten: Final Girls Tabby tells Imogen about her suspicion that Chip is the one who attacked both of them. She didn't want to say anything in front of the other girls. Imogen, crying, struggles to understand as he's one of Tabby's best friends while she and Chip have kissed. Tabby admits that it adds up as he was nearby on the night of both their assaults. Ever since she started thinking about it, she can't shake the feeling that it was him. It's all circumstantial, though Imogen thinks there could be some real evidence. When she woke up that morning on the beach after it happened, she didn't have her underwear. If it was Chip, he could have kept them as a souvenir. Chip is working late at The Orpheum so they can get into his house.

The successfully break-in and discover graphic horror films that depict rape stashed in the back of his closet. They confront Chip at The Orpheum, forcing him to confess. Tabby asks where he went the night of Karen's party, after she turned him down. He was drunk and upset. She asks where he went afterwards. Imogen asks if he went to the beach where she was laying passed out and helpless. Tabby asks about the night of the bonfire party, the one where he followed her. Then, when she was walking home, he raped her. Chip physically moves backwards as he vehemently denies it. Wes remembers him leaving the theater early while Greg saw him at the bonfire party. Even if he was there, that doesn't mean that he would do that. Imogen laments that he did; he raped Tabby and he raped her. Besides, they have proof. She caresses her stomach as their baby matches his DNA, which they obtained at the blood drive. He calls them fucking crazy. Tabby asks why he did it, wanting him to help them understand. They lie about not wanting to turn him over the police, especially for Imogen's baby, as she doesn't want everyone knowing. They do need closure so they can move on. Chip is the only person who can give that to them. Chip listens to their pleas, filling with emotion as they speak. He takes a moment before looking at Tabby.

Chip admits that she didn't want to be with him. But she was willing to go to some kegger in the woods with those jocks. When he saw her walking home she was a mess. He just wanted to be close to her. Tabby listens in surprise and disgust. She asks if he thinks that made them close. Imogen, barely holding back tears, asks for him to explain what happened to her. He pauses another moment before explaining. After Karen's party, he went to the beach to be alone. He saw Imogen but didn't want to hurt her, either. Imogen says that he did, he hurt both of them. Tabby wonders how he could do it as he was her best friend and he stole from her. She doesn't feel safe anymore. She never feels safe. If a guy gets near her she imagines the worst, that he'll do what Chip did. Imogen asks how many other girls he attacked. He swears it's just the two of them and he won't do it again. He thought they would let them get away with it in exchange for closure, but it was a lie. This year has made them very good liars. Imogen calls him sick and demented. He partnered up with her in health class when he knew this baby was his. He told her that he liked her and made her like him too. Then, he let her kiss him. That is not sick, that is psychotic.

Chip reels from their words as "A" approaches from behind Chip. The girls gasp in terror and stagger away from the villain. Chip turns to face "A", who is inches from his body. He asks who the fuck that is and moves behind the girls. He shouts out “fuck this” as he runs out of The Orpheum. Tabby and Imogen face "A", the latter taking ragged breaths as Tabby clings to her arm. Imogen tells A that Chip hurt both of them, the same way that Tom Beasley hurt Angela Waters. After a moment, A stalks forward, but moves past them on his way out of the theater. The girls hug one another tightly.

A week later after the Christmas festivities, Imogen, Tabby, Sidney, and Corey sit down in the kitchen to discuss Chip and their sexual assault case. Chip is already back at home as his parents made bail to bring him home for the holidays. The girls have been talking and want to press charges. They want him to pay for what he did. It won't be easy, but Corey knows some great lawyers who will work pro-bono. She'll do everything she can to help. Sidney will do anything and everything to put the nightmare behind them

That night at the Langsberry home, someone rings the doorbell and Chip answers. A leaps forward, raising a butcher knife above his head.

Identity[]

The assaulter was uncovered as Millwood High School student Chip Langsberry. His identity surprised the PLLs who didn't suspect him because of his close friendship with Tabby and burgeoning relationship with Imogen. However, Tabby began to suspect Chip when she recalled how upset he became after she rejected him at Karen's party. Chip was a deeply damaged teenager with extreme rape fantasies that he lived out in graphic horror films, expertly hidden in his basement closet. Tabby and Imogen confronted him in The Orpheum and tricked him into confessing, then sent "A" after him as revenge.
